✪ Villages and hamlets in remote Pune district
✪ Village transact and mobilization walks
✪ Satisfaction to take desired efforts for field work
2008 March! Winter was slowly giving way to the Summer. The peak hour of submissions and deadlines. Slowly every task moved towards its completion. Everyone's research went further. For me, research felt like a simile for life. The research work- its all stages. Right from finalization of the proposal, its tool design, pretesting, data collection till thesis writing. This is really like life stages. Everyone’s research is going to be submitted. Those stages will be completed. Situations would be different. There will be differences. But the things will happen. When I realized this, things became mild and the stress reduced. There will be a delay, but it will happen.
Video summary of this article.
Similar to January and February, in March also I got an opportunity for field work. The occasion was one field work component or study task. PRA i.e. Participatory Rural Appraisal. It was a village understanding task. One component of the syllabus. Students of our specialization were divided in three groups. We did this study task at three different locations of my own field work agency. We went there separately and did it. My group included Kishor Bidwe, Pravin Chokhandre, Prabhakar Pandit and Triveni Bhonde. We went to villages in remote Mawal block of Pune district- Andar Mawal area. We stayed there for 2-3 days. Very interior villages with mountains! As it was March, forest fire was there at some places. We were going to do village mapping as per the format for this task. For this, we were doing village transact (roaming across the village), preparing village map, doing stakeholder analysis and also we were having a dialogue with main organizations and key persons. We were going to do it with villagers. Here I was to learn how to talk with people, how to build a rapport and involve them. Triveni and Kishor could communicate efficiently with the people. They would get information also. I could learn and see how they interact with the people, how facilitate their participation. There were other things also. Discussions with people, meeting with women's groups and mobilization drives. We also had field members of the agency with us. Entire the experience was remarkable.
Some days before this task, as part of my field work, my agency wanted to do some survey work. That component was also included in this PRA process. But my field work guide felt that the tool/ questionnaire was not clear. We included this survey during our PRA work, but still some gaps remained. We did not get desired information in some villages. So during my field work, I again went to some villages to fill these gaps. It included villages of my group as well as other groups. For this, I had to work and travel more. I tried to collect as much information as possible. Sometimes I had to go on walking for several kilometers. This experience was also unique. I tried hard from my side. In this term of field work, I might have lacked articulation, but I did make many efforts. My field work guide also appreciated my efforts.
Thus, with so many unique experiences, Karve days slowly came to the last stage. The college year was at its last phase and soon the campus interview vibes arrived. We learned that some agencies would be coming for the campus interviews. Such innumerable memories and so much of learning! Company of friends and learning with them and from them! The faculties- Everyone was so good. They were like the potter craftsman. He supports the raw pot from inside and hammers it from outside. In the same way, the faculties taught and accompanied us.
The hostel memories- they were so different. Particularly Holi (Rang panchami) on the hostel! In the childhood, Holi was a very dangerous day for me. Not only friends, but elders too would strike the house with colours! In those days, I would hide in some neglected corner of some room or the rooftop of the house! But after coming to Karve, I started enjoying Holi also. I discovered its joy with friends. Also, I could throw pressures of all submissions away for a while and enjoy it. I could “switch off” myself and refresh myself for further tasks.

Participatory Rural Appraisal
