Got up at 4 am on the dawn of 7th December. Extremely cold weather in Munsyari! But was too eager to watch the sky! Gathered some courage and came out of the room. Oh! What a sight this is! Ursa Major is up and so above the horizon! Of course, its reason being North position of Munsyari. Even yesterday night Cassiopeia constellation was also quite up. In the dawn, bright Jupiter, Regulus, Castor and Pollux, Sirius, Arcturus and Spica are shining! Many artificial satellites are also visible. Slowly the day is breaking. Observing through the telescope is very difficult. Removing the lid on the telescope was difficult! Fingers are getting numb. Observed through the telescope for some time. In the East, there is one bright star. It cannot be Venus. There is no such a bright star near Libra. Surely, it is Mercury. Observed it for half an hour!

Thoroughly enjoyed the scenes visible in the day. Himalaya and the peaks! Mind just cannot get satisfied! So high mountains, small villages! Curved roads! Munsiyari actually has plenty of things for exploring and trekking. Some glacier treks are also nearby. Kheliya top is one such trek. I wish to do it. But it is very long and time- consuming. It would take 7-8 hours in total. As I am waking in the night for sky watching, I need to take rest in the day. So I could not do this trek. I roamed in the village itself. And I am planning to do one small trek near Munsyari.
In the evening, I had a special meet with a singer. Sundar Bafila from Berinag, Pithauragarh district has come here for singing in the village fair. He is visually impaired. Gupta Ji introduced me to him as he is his friend and staying in a room near my room. I had good discussion with him. He sang wonderful Hindi and Pahari songs! So expressive! He has done many shows and programmes. I continued to meet him through the day. He has his own youtube channel. But he is unaware that in today’s times how visually impaired persons use technology and smoothly operate mobile and computer. I informed him about this and shared experiences of one of my friend.
After enjoying scenic Himalaya view for entire the day, now waiting for the night sky. The Sun was obstructed by the mountains just after 3 pm. Slowly temperature started to drop. By 5 pm, snow- peaks of Pancha Chuli started to glow in red! And by 5:30 pm, the night it is! Stars are visible. Today and tomorrow, I will have good window of dark sky till the Moon arises. This window is having excellent sky! For some time, the whitish patch of our Milky way is visible near Cassiopeia and Auriga region and also near Altar and Deneb stars in he west! The binoculars revealed the white glow of the Milky way! Many faint satellites are also going! Whoa! I again tried for time lapse video of the Moon, but still it did not come good. But what a treat it is just to watch! Slowly reddish glow comes from behind the peaks! Initially one point comes up and slowly entire the moon! The peak is seen indirectly in that glow. Wow!
Thus, continued sky watching from Munsyari for two nights on 7th and 8th December. On 8th night, I could also capture the Moonrise from behind the peaks. Even star- trails captured properly. And as the Moon arose little late, I could enjoy dark sky. Photos are showing not only Andromeda galaxy, but also the fainter Triangulum Galaxy (M 33) also. Uranus also clearly captured just near Pleiades. Sometimes there were clouds and so telescopic observations were not much. Also there was limitation due to cold. But the binoculars showed maddening stars.
This is the story of three nights in Munsyari. Thoroughly enjoyed the sky- watching from such a location! Gave this treat to myself. Also captured plenty of photos and videos. Enjoyed the snow- mountain peaks as much as I could! Now it is time to go! From here, jeep is the convenient option to go to Pithauragarh. From here buses go to Thal, but then it takes a longer route to Pithauragarh. The jeeps leave very early in the morning- 4:30 am and then by 11:00 am. I decided to go by the next jeep. I talked with a jeep driver known to Shri. Gupta ji. I will again watch the sky in the dawn and then will pack the telescope. I will also have time to do a small trek near Munsyari. After this was finalized, continued sky watching on the night of 8th and finally decided to take sleep, but only after placing my mobile for time lapse photography.

कुमाऊँमधील रम्य भटकंती भाग ५: मुन्सियारीतून केलेलं आकाश दर्शन
✪ अंध गायकासोबत विशेष भेट
✪ सप्तर्षी, स्वाती आणि पंचा-चुली!
✪ रात्रीच्या आकाशातली रंगांची उधळण आणि स्टार ट्रेल्स!

✪ भयाण थंडीमध्ये चहाची ऊब!
७ डिसेंबरच्या पहाटे ४ वाजता उठलो. मुन्सियारीची भयाण थंडी! पण आकाशात काय काय दिसेल ही उत्सुकताही तेवढीच! हिंमत करून दार उघडून बाहेर आलो. अहा हा! काय विलक्षण दृश्य आहे! सप्तर्षी पूर्ण वर आलेले आहेत. आणि महाराष्ट्रातून दिसतात त्याहून ते जास्त उंचीवर दिसत आहेत! कारण अर्थातच मुन्सियारीचं उत्तरेकडचं स्थान. काल संध्याकाळी शर्मिष्ठा तारकासमूहसुद्धा बराच वर दिसत होता. पहाटे तेजस्वी गुरू, मघा, पुनर्वसू, व्याध, स्वाती, चित्रा छान दिसले! अनेक कृत्रिम उपग्रहसुद्धा दिसत आहेत. हळु हळु पहाट होतेय. दुर्बिणीतून बघणं मात्र खूप कठिण आहे. दुर्बिणीच्या आरशाचं झाकण काढायलाच कष्ट पडले! बोटं गार पडत आहेत. थोडा वेळ दुर्बिणीतून निरीक्षण केलं. उजाडण्याआधी पूर्वेला एक ठळक तारा दिसला. हा शुक्र तर असू शकत नाही! विशाखा नक्षत्राच्या जवळ इतका ठळक तारा नाहीय! हा निश्चितच बूध असला पाहिजे. चक्क अर्धा तास बूध दिसला!

मुन्सियारीमधली पहिली रात्र छान गेली. अद्याप चंद्र मोठा आहे आणि त्यामुळे थोडा फरक पडतोय. जितके अंधुक तारे अजून दिसले असते ते अजून दिसत नाही आहेत. दुर्बिणीतूनसुद्धा खूप वेगळे असे ऑब्जेक्टस अजून तरी दिसले नाही आहेत. ही कसर फोटोमध्ये मात्र भरून निघतेय. प्रत्येक लाँग एक्स्पोजर फोटोमध्ये उपग्रहांच्या ट्रेल्स येत आहेत. अजून दोन रात्री इथे थांबेन. पहाटेपासून उठल्यामुळे सकाळी परत झोप घेतली. रात्रभरामध्ये मोबाईलमध्ये आलेले फोटो बघितले. चंद्रोदयाचा व्हिडिओ/ टाईम लॅप्स तितका नीट आला नाहीय. आज आणि उद्या परत त्याचा प्रयत्न करेन. थंड पाण्यामुळे सकाळचं आन्हिक आवरणं हा मात्र त्रासाचा विषय ठरतोय! आणि थंडीवर चहाची ऊब!
दिवसा दिवसाच्या दृश्यांचा मनसोक्त आनंद घेतोय. कितीही वेळा बघितलं तरी मन भरत नाही. काय ते उंच पर्वत! डोंगरातली छोटी छोटी गावं! त्यात जाणारे नागमोडी रस्ते! दूरवरून डोंगरातल्या वळणादार रेषा वाटतात! मुन्सियारीच्या जवळ तसं फिरायला खूप आहे. काही ग्लेशियर्सचे ट्रेक इथून जवळच सुरू होतात. मुन्सियारीमध्येही काही छान ट्रेक आहेत. खेलिया टॉप हा असाच एक ट्रेक. तो करायची इच्छा आहे. पण तो खूप मोठा आहे- जाऊन येऊन सात- आठ तास जातील. आणि आकाश दर्शनाचं जागरण होत असल्यामुळे दिवसा आराम केला पाहिजे. त्यामुळे हा ट्रेक नाही करता आला. पण मुन्सियारी गावातच जास्त फिरलो. आणि अगदी जवळचे छोटे ट्रेक करतो आहे.
संध्याकाळी एक विशेष भेट झाली. पिथौरागढ़ जिल्ह्यातल्या बेरीनागचे अंध गायक- सुंदर बाफिला भेटले. इथे गावात एक जत्रा सुरू आहे. त्यात गाण्यासाठी ते आले आहेत. गुप्ताजींचे मित्र असल्यामुळे त्यांनी ओळख करून दिली. ते माझ्या बाजूच्या रूममध्येच थांबले आहेत. त्यांच्याशी छान गप्पा झाल्या. त्यांनी बोलता बोलता सहज म्हणून काही गाणी गायली! अप्रतिम वाटली! त्यांचे बरेच कार्यक्रम व शो झालेले आहेत. दिवसभरात त्यांच्याशी अधून मधून भेट होत राहिली. त्यांचं युट्युब चॅनल आहे. पण आज आधुनिक तंत्रज्ञान वापरून अंध व्यक्तीसुद्धा कसा कंप्युटर व मोबाईल वापरू शकतात हे त्यांना माहिती नव्हतं. त्याबद्दल त्यांना थोडी माहिती दिली. माझ्या ओळखीच्या व्यक्तींचे अनुभव सांगितले.
दिवसभर हिमालयातल्या दृश्यांचा आनंद घेतल्यावर आता रात्रीच्या आकाशाची ओढ वाटतेय! सूर्य साधारण तीन वाजताच डोंगराआड गेला. हळु हळु थंडी सुरू झाली. पाच वाजता पंचा चुलीचे शिखर लाल व्हायला लागले! आणि साडेपाच पासून रात्र सुरू झाली! तारे प्रकाशित झाले! आज आणि उद्या चंद्र येईपर्यंत चांगला अंधार मिळेल. त्या वेळेत खूप सुंदर आकाश मिळालं! शर्मिष्ठा- सारथी परिसरामध्ये आणि पश्चिमेला श्रवण आणि डेनेब ता-याच्या जवळ आकाशगंगेचा पांढरा पट्टा काही वेळ दिसला! बायनॅक्युलरने तर अप्रतिम पिठुर चांदणं दिसतंय! ढिगाने अंधुक उपग्रह जाताना दिसत आहेत! वा! सातच्या रात्री चंद्रोदयाचा टाईम लॅप्स परत एकदा घेऊन बघितला. पण नीट आला नाही. पण नुसत्या डोळ्यांनी दिसणारं काय दृश्य आहे ते! शिखरांमागून हळु हळु लालसर प्रकाश वर येतो! हळु हळु चंद्राचं टोक वर येतं आणि त्या प्रकाशात शिखर पाठमोरं दिसतं! वा!
असं सात आणि आठ डिसेंबरच्या रात्री मुन्सियारीवरून छान आकाश दर्शन केलं. अखेर आठच्या रात्री शिखरांच्या आड उगवणारा चंद्रही टिपता आला! स्टार ट्रेलचाही छान टाईम लॅप्स घेता आला. रात्री चंद्र थोडा उशीरा उगवत असल्यामुळे तोपर्यंत आकाशही छान बघता आलं. फोटोमध्ये अँड्रोमिडा आकाशगंगाच नाही तर अंधुक अशी ट्रायंग्ल्युलम गॅलक्सी- M33 सुद्धा उमटली! युरेनससुद्धा कृत्तिकेच्या बाजूला फोटोत स्पष्ट आला. मध्ये मध्ये ढग असल्यामुळे टेलिस्कोपिक निरीक्षणं अशी मात्र तेवढी करता आली नाहीत. शिवाय दुर्बिणीने बघताना थंडीमुळे मर्यादाही आली. बायनॅक्युलरने मात्र वेड्यासारखे तारे दिसले.
असं मुन्सियारीमध्ये तीन रात्री मनसोक्त आकाश दर्शन केलं. अगदी सगळी इच्छा पूर्ण केली. टाईम लॅप्स व्हिडिओही मिळाला. रात्रीच्या अंधारात आणि पहाटेही दिसणारे पंचा चुली शिखर डोळे भरून बघितले! आता परत जावं लागेल! इथून पिथौरागढ़ला जाण्यासाठी जीपच सोयीची आहे. इथून थलकडे बस जाते, पण तिथून पिथौरागढ़ला जायला फिरून जावं लागेल. दोन वेळेस जीप्स निघतात. काही जीप्स अगदी पहाटे साडेचारला जातात आणि दुस-या काही जीप्स सकाळी ११ ला जातात. मी त्या जीपने जायचं ठरवलं. गुप्ताजींच्या ओळखीने जीपवाल्याशी बोलून ठेवलं. पहाटेचं आकाश दर्शन करून मग टेलिस्कोप पॅक करून ठेवेन आणि मुन्सियारीतच एक ट्रेक करेन. त्यानंतर ११ च्या जीपने निघेन. हे ठरवून आठच्या रात्री उशीरापर्यंत आकाश दर्शन केलं. नंतर ढग आले तेव्हा टाईम लॅप्सचे फोटो लावून निद्राधीन झालो.
