Brave girl of Auschwitz- Mala Zimetbaum

Bloody history of the Second World war! Nazi Germany, their cruelty and six million Jews! Also Gypsies, Slavs and others tortured by the Nazis! Nazis killed 1.1 million people in Auschwitz alone! Even reading about it feels so painful. This is one of the darkest epoch in the history of the humanity. But there did exist some rays of light those illuminated the darkest night! One of them is Mala Zimetbaum.

There are some examples of Jews who had escaped from Auschwitz and other doomed death camps. They were benefited from the Nazi perception that "Jews cannot be intelligent." They used the Nazi mentality and their typical working style against them. They had tremendous courage and self belief. Such people existed. Some used S.S. uniforms and S.S. vehicles only! They used false documents and left the camp in broad daylight! And this Mala. She showed the guards that she is a German and mistakenly was brought here. She just walked out of the gate! 

Mala Zimetbaum was a Polish Jew. Born 1918. As her father became visually impaired when she had just left school, she started working in a factory. Later on her family was shifted to Belgium. When 1942 was about to finish, she was captured from Belgium with other Jews. After a horrifying travel of 2 days, she reached Auschwitz. 

Mala was fluent in seven languages. So she was given the work of interpreter and messenger and thus she could avoid the gas chamber. With her smartness and efficiency, she got other tasks too. 1943 and then 1944! The death industry had continuous smoke! In this 1.5 years, she completely understood the systems at Auschwitz. A resistance group was active underground. She worked shoulder to shoulder with them. By using her position and capacity, she helped many, especially the weak patients. She provided moral support.

Some people were determined to make the outside world know about this death factory. At least a few Jews would be saved. Some persons did show courage to do this and they planned minutely. The Guards and the officers- how they work, at what time they take breaks, where checking is done, when the shifts are changed, which documents are needed, from where S.S. uniforms can be obtained- they prepared minutely. From the stolen materials of Jews and with the help of the underground Resistance, they prepared themselves. In one such escape, two persons hid for 72 hours in one neglected corner of Auschwitz. In order to keep the dog squad away, they used gasoline and Vodka. The search was called off after 72 hours. When the guarding was the least, they obtained S.S. uniforms. They showed false documents to the junior officers and obtained the vehicle of the camp head! Then they started the vehicle as if they are real S.S.! They answered the gatekeeper in proper German! They also shouted like proper S.S.- open the door fast!

Mala and her lover did the same thing. Her companion- Edek- he was trapped in Auschwitz since he was a teen. They dared this escape in June 1944. They hid their arm tattoo of being a prisoner Jew. She carefully dressed herself like a German woman. I am a German, I was mistakenly sent here, she pretended. Edek was some being sent outside for some urgent work, it was the requirement of the nation. Her faces and the eyes appeared like a German woman. She had the documents to support it, signed by a senior officer with a seal. They employed the Nazi mentality against them- how can juniors disobey the senior’s order! And the Nazis would think- Jews are so distinct then Germans!‌ They proved this wrong! And so much courage, confidence and dare to leave in the day! “Jews cannot do this!”
 
What they must have felt while walking towards the gate! How loud their heartbeats would be! With so much of stress in the mind, how they could have kept their faces calm! From where they could have brought this courage! Both of them safely went out of the camp. They safely walked some distance and then one Resistance person sheltered them safely. For 15 days, they lived in the open world. But they strove for escape of the others down there! And one day- it happened! They had reached Slovakia border. When they were purchasing food in exchange of gold in a Poland village, German patrol spotted Mala. Till then news of their escape had reached everywhere. The patrol immediately started inquiry. Edek was watching it from a distance. He could have fled then and there! But he did not! He chose to be with her and both of them were captured!

Then the two and others from their units were tortured much. They were tortured to tell names of their companions in this plan. But they did not tell their names. In September 1944, the Nazis killed them. But even while dying, the 24 year old Mala showed her bravery and courage. She cut her vein from a blade and slapped the S.S. guard in the face! Nazis are so powerful and no one can stand against them, it is a lie, they proved. Even while dying, they lightened the dark night! Some other Jews showed such courage  and brought forth truth of such death factories. Then at least some Jews could be saved. The prisoners got courage to survive…

दुसर्‍या महायुद्धाचा रक्तरंजित इतिहास! नाझी जर्मनी, त्यांचे अत्याचार आणि साठ लाख ज्यु! त्याशिवाय जिप्सी, स्लाव्ह आणि इतरांचं नाझींनी केलेलं शोषण. त्यात एकट्या ऑशविट्झ छळछावणीत नाझींनी हत्या केलेले अकरा लाख लोक. त्या नरकयातनांची वर्णनं वाचतानाही त्रास होतो. मानवजातीचा हा कलंक अध्याय. पण ह्या काळरात्रीच्या अंधारालाही पराभूत करणारे काही तेजाचे कण सापडतात. त्यातलीच एक तेजशलाका म्हणजे माला झिमेटबाऊम.

ऑशविट्झ आणि इतर ठिकाणांवरून ज्यूंनी स्वत:ची सुटका करून घेतल्याची काही उदाहरणं आहेत. “ज्यू आणि इतर लोक इतके बुद्धीमान असूच शकत नाहीत" ह्या नाझींच्या मानसिकतेचाच आणि त्यांच्या एका ठराविक कार्यपद्धतीचा फायदा घेऊन आणि अर्थातच कमालीची हिंमत करून स्वत:ची सुटका करून घेणारे लोक. मग ते एस. एस. चीच गाडी व त्यांचा युनिफॉर्म- त्यांचे खोटे कागदपत्र घेऊन राजरोसपणे निसटण्याची हिंमत करणारे लोक! किंवा स्वत:ला जर्मन असल्याचं सांगत स्वत: चालत चालत ऑशविट्झमधून बाहेर पडणारी माला! माला झिमेटबाऊम पोलिश ज्यू होती. जन्म १९१८. कोवळ्या वयात तिच्या वडिलांना अंधत्व आल्यामुळे तिने कारखान्यामध्ये काम सुरू केलं. पुढे तिचं कुटुंब बेल्जियममध्ये स्थलांतरित झालं. तिच्या कुटुंबाला बेल्जियममधून इतर ज्यूंसोबत १९४२ च्या शेवटी पकडलं गेलं. दोन दिवसांचा प्राणांतिक प्रवास करून अखेर ती ऑशविट्झला पोहचली.

मालाला सात भाषा येत होत्या. त्यामुळे तिला छळछावणीमध्ये दुभाषी म्हणून निरोप देण्याचं काम देण्यात आलं आणि गॅस चेंबरमधून ती वाचली. तिच्या हुशारीमुळे हळु हळु तिने इतरही कामं घेतली. १९४३ आणि १९४४! ऑशविट्झचा मृत्युचा कारखाना धगधगत होता. ह्या दीड वर्षात तिने ऑशविट्झ छळछावणीची सगळी पद्धत समजून घेतली. तिथे ज्युंचा रेझिस्टंस गट कार्यरत होता. त्यांच्यासोबत तिने काम सुरू केलं. ऑशविट्झच्या यंत्रणेतलं तिचं स्थान व क्षमता वापरून अनेकांना व अशक्त रुग्णांना तिने मदत केली. धीर दिला. 

बाहेरच्या जगाला ऑशविट्झमध्ये चालेलं धगधगतं हत्याकांड माहित व्हावं म्हणून काही लोक तयार झाले. किमान नंतर येणारे तरी ज्यू वाचावेत हा त्यांचा प्रयत्न होता. त्यासाठी काही लोकांनी खूप हिंमत केली आणि नियोजन केलं. गार्डस आणि अधिकारी कोणत्या वेळेत काय काम करतात, कुठे कुठे तपासणी केली जाते, शिफ्टस कधी बदलतात, कागदपत्रांची कशी गरज असते, एस.एस. चे गणवेश कसे वापरता येऊ शकतात इ. ह्या वीरांनी शिकून घेतलं. ऑशविट्झमध्ये येणार्‍या लोकांच्या चोरलेल्या सामानाच्या कोठारातून आणि भूमिगत रेझिस्टंस नेटवर्कद्वारे त्यांनी तयारी केली. अशाच एका पलायनामध्ये दोन जण ७२ तास ऑशविट्झच्या एका मातीच्या ढिगार्‍याखाली लपून राहिले. शोधक कुत्र्यांनाही ते सापडून नयेत म्हणून त्यांनी गॅसोलिन आणि व्होडका आसपास फवारली. ७२ तासांनंतर शोध थांबला. पहारा कमीत कमी होता तेव्हा त्यांनी एस.एस. युनिफॉर्म घेतले. दुय्यम अधिकार्‍याला खोटं कागदपत्र दाखवून छळछावणीच्याच अधिकार्‍याची गाडीही त्यांनी मिळवली! आणि त्यानंतर मात्र ते अगदी राजरोसपणे बाहेर पडले! गेटवरच्या गार्डला जर्मनमध्ये उत्तर दिलं- कागदपत्र दाखवलं! आणि टिपिकल एस.एस. प्रमाणे दरडावून दार उघडायला लावलं! 

अशीच युक्ती मालाने आणि तिच्या प्रियकराने केली. तिचा प्रियकर- एडेक- तो तर बिचारा कोवळ्या वयापासून इथेच अडकलेला होता. दोघांनी जून १९४४ मध्ये हिंमत केली. ज्यू असल्याची गोंदवलेली खूण झाकली. मी जर्मन नागरीक आहे आणि अधिकार्‍यांच्या नजरचुकीने इथे आले होते, असं तिने दाखवलं. तिचा चेहरा- डोळे अगदी जर्मन होते. तिच्याकडे कागदपत्रं होती. एडेकने बाहेरच्या कामाचे खोटे कागदपत्र बनवले होते. त्यावर वरच्या अधिकार्‍याची खोटी सही- शिक्का होता. तातडीच्या कामासाठी ऑशविट्झला त्याने बाहेर जाण्याची गरज होती- देशाची ती गरज होती. नाझींच्या मानसिकतेचा त्यांनी योग्य वापर केला- वरिष्ठांचा हुकूम खालचे लोक कसे टाळणार! शिवाय नाझींना तर वाटायचं की, ज्यू हे जर्मनांपेक्षा अगदी वेगळे असतात. तेही त्यांनी चूक असल्याचं सिद्ध केलं. शिवाय इतकी हिंमत, इतका आत्मविश्वास आणि दिवसा बाहेर पडण्याची जोखीम! "हे तर ज्यू करूच शकत नाहीत!” 

ऑशविट्झच्या गेटकडे येताना त्यांची मन:स्थिती काय झाली असेल! हृदयाची धडधड केवढी वाढली असेल! मनात इतका प्रचंड तणाव असताना त्यांनी चेहरा शांत कसा ठेवला असेल! कुठून आणली असेल ती हिंमत आणि ते धैर्य! दोघंही सुखरूप बाहेर पडले. सुरक्षित चालत काही अंतर पुढे गेले. एका रेझिस्टंसच्या माणसाने त्यांना सुरक्षित निवारा दिला. १५ दिवस ते मोकळ्या जगात राहिले. स्वत: सुटूनही मागे राहिलेल्या इतरांना कसं बाहेर आणता येईल हे त्यांचे प्रयत्न सुरू होते. आणि एका दिवशी परत घात झाला! स्लोव्हाकियाच्या सीमेवरील पोलंडमधल्या गावात सोन्याच्या बदल्यात अन्न घेत असताना एका जर्मन पथकाला माला दिसली! तोपर्यंत तिच्या पलायनाची बातमी सगळ्यांना कळालेली होती! लगेचच पथकाने तिची चौकशी सुरू केली! एडेक हे लांबून बघत होता. तो दूर राहून मागच्या मागे निसटू शकला असता! पण त्याने तसं केलं नाही. तोही तिच्यासोबत आला आणि दोघंही पकडले गेले!

पुढे दोघांचा व त्यांच्या गटातील इतरांचा प्रचंड छळ झाला. कटात कोण कोण होते ह्यासाठी दोघांना त्रास दिला गेला. पण त्यांनी कोणाची माहिती दिली नाही. सप्टेंबर १९४४ मध्ये दोघांना नाझींनी ठार केलं. पण मरतानाही २४ वर्षांच्या मालाने आपलं तेज प्रकट केलं. स्वत:ची नस ब्लेडने कापून त्या रक्तरंजित हाताने तिने गार्डला थप्पड लगावली! नाझी शक्तीशाली आहेत आणि इतर कोणी त्यांचा विरोध करू शकत नाही, हे असत्य आहे हे दाखवून दिलं. मरता मरता स्वत:च्या प्रकाशाने ती काळीकुट्ट रात्रही दोघांनी प्रकाशित केली. अशाच इतरही ज्युंनी हिंमत आणि जिद्द करून ह्या नरक यातना केंद्रांचं सत्य बाहेर आणलं. त्यामुळे काही ठिकाणचे थोडे ज्यू तरी वाचू शकले. जे बंदिवान होते, त्यांना टिकाव धरण्याची हिंमत मिळाली...
