✪ Difficult subjects- Case work, Research Methodology and Public Health
✪ Really need a great luck to get such teachers!
✪ "This is to be remembered!"
✪ Encouragement to raw talent
✪ Field work in the community, report writing and conferences with the faculty
✪ Notes and xeroxes in demand on the eve of the paper!
The second room on the second floor of the hostel of Karve Institute- the room no. 15 became my home! Sagram Kadam from Nagar and Pravin Chokhandre from Nagpur were my roommates. Sangram was like a bodybuilder. Pravin was slim and he would speak Nagpur styled Marathi with Hindi spice! He was cheerful and he would speak English to practice spoken English! I still recall the instructions of “Parade Savdhan- Vishram” given by Sangram in NCC uniform on 15th August.
In the first year, three subjects were slightly difficult. First, Public health. Its concepts and social aspects were okay. But those Diphtheria- Malaria- Tetanus and their elaboration, parameters etc! It was like- so cozy atmosphere is there and we are talking about these illnesses! Anuradha Patil madam would teach this subject beautifully. I still remember her gentle narration, explanation and cheerful face! New friends made me wander in an unknown territory of Ghulam Ali, poems and mehfils! My fixed routine also was broken. Here, my French and German were also discontinued. I had learned French for three years and German for two years. Initially I had thought that I could continue my German. But considering the syllabus, the schedule and expected study, I left the thought of pursuing it further.
Video summary of this article.
For many, the subject Research Methodology was tough. As a research thesis was part of MSW curriculum, this subject was there from the first year. My favourite Nagmani Rao madam would teach it. She also belonged to my specialization! She would teach through many examples and incidents. So I did not find it difficult. But the technical concepts were to be understood properly. It dealt with terms such as sampling method, sampling universe, data sets, data analysis and all that. Nagmani Madam was originally South Indian. She studied in TISS and later on she worked with women in Sangali and other places. With much effort, she learned Marathi and later on she also taught in Marathi. Her spoken Marathi had a slight touch of South India and English influence. "Due to you, I learned Marathi and now I taught in Marathi! She was much loved by the students. She was always available to the students. One needs real luck to get such teachers! I attained the capacity to invite a non- tea drinking girl to a hotel, just for talking! Once my brother had said that Pune is a factory of beautiful girls! And we were lucky to visit Karvenagar and Cummins area. My journey started in the opposite direction of being an introvert!
The subject Case Work also was technical. Similar to Research, Case Work is also a method of social work. Case Work means specific examples of intervention with specific cases. Or work done with a specific person. For example, long term counseling or therapy done with a person. Geeta Rao madam would teach this subject. During our orientation lectures, she was in the U.S. But her fame had reached us. Geeta Rao madam! Very impeccable, strict and straight forward teacher! Short hair, bindi and determined face! Very committed to teaching. She would simplify the subject by taking small points. Students fear her without a reason! Maybe as she was also inspecting the boys' hostel! She had shared once how she learned car driving after 50. Her skill lab was worth experiencing. A small incident or event and her long analysis from all perspectives! So great! If such teachers are there, then teaching for them and learning for us becomes beautiful! The students were mostly raw. But still, the faculties appreciate their qualities. They would encourage us. In their own parlance, this "positive stroke" would help the students to progress further.
Every smiling and cheerful Mahesh Thakur sir would also teach us (he is the Director now). He was also favourite of the students. Karuna sir from our specialization would also teach. He would affectionately talk with the rural students. My Field Work guide Ruma Bawikar madam would teach Psychology. Her manner of teaching was gentle. Communication skills, psychology and upbringing of personality is a foundation for social work. Also, child- psychology and stages of development of the personality. Due to her teaching, I still remember this subject. Not only humans, but how even animals are bound by their habits, she would teach us with the example of Pavlov’s puppy! She would then smile and tell that people later only remember the puppy and not the subject! “This you have to remember” she would tell time and again and thus made us remember it! As a Guide for field work, she was friendly.
The first year's field work was an uncharted area for me. Interacting with the community teachers and children. Also doing the tasks told by the Guide. I did not have confidence in my presentation and talking with people at length. I had a bookish nature. So my field work was not up to the mark. But madam would explain to me how it should be, how one should initiate a dialogue. My field work with the Pratham organization was simple actually. But one of my friends- Sai’s field work was very challenging. She was placed in an organization working for palliative care. Her work included interacting with the last stage cancer patients! It was meeting them, talking to them and understanding their last desires. It was a very different world. Palliative care means just last stage care- no more treatment. For the first few days, she would cry a lot. But her Guide was Geeta Rao. She helped her and later on Sai performed well. She would tell, such last stage patients- they feel happy even if we speak a word with them. They feel happy even when we hold their hand. They too can feel happy. Her experiences were very touching. She had written excellent reports.
Some friends had this kind of challenging field work. Someone would have to travel a lot. Some were placed with children's institutions. Their problems were unique. Some agencies worked with intellectually challenged children. Some of my friends had some experience in this field also. As we were staying together and meeting continuously, we would learn from their experiences and their subjects. After the field work is complete, we would need to write the report in two days and keep the file in the desk of the Faculty. We would get their remarks. Then we would also have an individual conference and a group conference with all the field work students of that Guide! I started to enjoy report writing. The schedule was hectic but equally enjoyable. After lectures finished by 3 pm in the afternoon, there would be conferences. Or reading assignments in the library. Great books and study vibes! Sometimes it will continue till evening. By evening or by night sometimes we would see Nagmani madam going and she would say “happy working!”
Four girls and three boys- we had made a small presentation on women empowerment. It included points related to exploitation of women and their journey towards a super woman. Such activities were useful to internalize what we were learning. Such small steps were cultivating the students. Other students and faculties were a motivating factor.
The first term examination took place by Diwali! Other subjects were simple. But many were worried about Public Health, Case Work and Research due to technical components! In the paper for Public Health, questions were not asked about diseases, their causative factors- incubation period etc. and they were only about public health related aspects! In a difficult match, we got a batting pitch. There was pin drop silence in the hostel on the eve of the Case Work and Research papers! Xerox pages, notes, cuttings were rampant! Even my notes were in demand. Everyone would suspect- he must have got some good notes! Boys were continuously seeking each- other’s notes! People would study till late night by listening to Radio (“Tu hi meri shab hai” kind of songs)! The hostel Mamas were alert. But these papers were also easy and the first term was concluded!

संशोधन ही पण सामाजिक कामाची एक पद्धत आहे (a method of social work), तशीच केस वर्कसुद्धा.
