Hello. November 2006! I had gone to Parbhani during Diwali holidays. Karve college schedule was so tight, so we had just four days break. But still we badly missed the college. There was the study momentum of 3-4 month. All things had fallen in place. We just missed the affectionate atmosphere, like the one the corporate people have in their offices. So the holidays did not feel like that. Not only the vacations, but also Sundays would be difficult on the hostel.

I got good marks in the first term examination. Also in the Research paper. I was slightly worried about the field work. There marks are given differently. Agency conferences and review meetings for the field work continued. The next semester started and the study continued. Once theory of Research was taught, its practical started. For this, entire the class took one project through the Research lab. It was decided as a survey of city bus commuters in Pune. Entire the class jointly prepared its questionnaire, scope, sampling universe etc. Small groups were formed to divide tasks. We went at some places and interviewed the commuters. Later on the data was collectively analyzed and its report was written. While this was taking place, everyone started to think about their subjects for research and started making the proposals. For this, there everyone was assigned guidance of one faculty. 

I chose to do research on work of one organization in Latur, Maharashtra working towards solid waste management. Ujjwala Masdekar madam was my Research guide. We moved on with finalizing the objectives, scope, assumptions, items of information, sampling methods, research designs (exploratory/ descriptive), research methods (case study) with the inputs of madam. Along with the Research Guide, every student was also assigned one individual Guide. We would have conferences with that faculty also. For me, Chitralekha Rajuskar madam was having that role.

Group work was one subject, but the entire study and many assignments were done in groups. There were plenty of benefits of this collective study. We would learn from each other, but would also learn through discussions. Importantly, with the interactive form, learning was never burdensome. When 2006 was coming to an end, we befriended all non- teaching staff and Mamas. Here we got friendships for life. Boys and girls were interacting regularly. As a result, some affairs also took place. Initially, the girls would suffer and the boys would suffer later on! Some suffered for their lives! As they found their life partners here. We slowly learned this also from the seniors! 

In January 2007, advance orientation visits were there. Every specialization group was going to visit a selected set of organizations belonging to that specialization. These visits were amazing. But alas, friends from other specializations were missed! Here I missed the company of my friends from other specializations viz. Labour Welfare (my 3 field work friends belonged to this specialization), Medical and Psychiatric Social Work (MPSW) and Family and Child Welfare! These visits were great. Till then, we had great bonding with the faculties and the friends. We would have plenty of discussions even while traveling. One organization in Dehu village working towards sanitation, NCAS (National Centre for Advocacy Studies) working towards public advocacy, CEE (Centre for Environment Education) and SOPPECOM (Society for Promoting Participative Ecosystem Management- SOPPECOM), the organization where Joy sir, husband of Nagamani madam worked, were among the notable organizations we had visited. Visit to SOPPECOM was rather tough one as entire the subject was technial and multi lateral. But still we enjoyed. Good discussions everywhere. It was also great to learn how the faculties plan and conduct these visits and the debates. 

After these visits, there was a two day conference. It was different for each specialization. It was planned by the seniors. On the first day, the seniors presented various topics. They had a study tour to Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. They shared about their learning and organizations working there and their observations. It was in form of Power Point presentations, discussions and question answers. On the next day, we presented our learning. Every one of us spoke. We discussed about the organizations we visited. I also presented on typhoon and Tsunami calamities. When I rose to present, seniors clapped beforehand for encouragement and I still feel it! From seniors of my CD specialization, Parmeshwar belonged to Parbhani, my hometown. Also Shishir Savant, Nagesh Jadhav, Yogita Salvi and Joe were very friendly. From other specializations Francis (he would always say I mean, I mean while talking) and some others had become friends. I could speak finally in the presentation, not a continuous speech, but with the help of PPT! Also some were group- presentations.

Encouragement given to capacities of the students is invaluable. It helps to do away with self doubts and increases confidence. The "attention" given at a young age gives energy. This attention helps it to grow. Due to similar encouragement, my writing skill was getting polished. Maydeo madam would ask me Marathi words in her lectures. So I slowly developed the knack of quickly finding synonyms. Today I mainly work as a translator and that translation originally began there!

Around the same time, the college gathering took place! What a fun it was! Friends were awake till late night for stage decoration! Seniors and juniors both worked together. It had much fun- Folk songs and movement based songs such as "आम्ही ठाकर ठाकर ह्या रानाची पाखरं" (We are tribals and free birds of the forest), traditional art presentations, unique costumes and attires, traditional music instruments. Even the faculties participated in it. Some student performed brilliantly. In the first year welcome programme, I had come to know that “jamming session” is something that exists! I had even felt it burdensome. But now, after six month socialization by hostel friends, the situation was changed! I had a free style dance with friends to my own surprise! Nagmani Rao madam sang her favourite movement song"झुंजुमुंजू पहाट झाली" and Thakur sir sang it one more time "Purani Jeans aur Guitar"! Anuradha Patil madam also sang a beautiful song "अशी पाखरं येती!" So much fun and wonderful memories!  

In the second term of the field work, I had tried to implement steps suggested by Bawikar madam. Bawikar madam would teach with smiling face. She would also teach technical aspects. Accordingly, I had prepared the agency profile. In the next phase, I visited communities in Pune- Lohiya Nagar, Ghorpade Peth, Ganj Peth etc. I would visit the community classes and interact with the teachers there. It also included observing their work and giving suggestions in case of problems. I was also doing some activities with the children. I could not quite get a grip of this task. Rather I was unclear about exact output expected from me. I was taking efforts, but still I was stumbling in the dark. It was something like test cricket batting. So at the time of field work assessment, Bawikar madam told me, "Don't work with children. Wait for some years." I felt slightly bad about it, but I was not surprised. Then in the next year, the occasion did not come. I worked with other organizations. Later on, I mainly worked in the translation sector. But since last some years, I am conducting activities with children and even conducting their camps. Its credit goes to my daughter! And also my hostel friends who had taught me many tricks and sounds which were very useful to "build a rapport" with children!

Sometimes there would be lectures or workshops by visiting faculties. Two Karve alumni had given wonderful lectures. Anand Pawar had conducted one on gender and Anil Shidore sir had conducted one on “Project Moonshot.” In this, Anil Shidore sir had decoded management beautifully. … Such memorable was the first year! Compared to the field work, Research work was rather on track. Every stage was done appropriately. Masdekar madam would explain minutely. Accordingly, I did my reference reading, planned for secondary data and then made my outline. After some time, when I would go to meet her and give my file, she would just express her awe, she would say, "don’t give it!" Individual conferences with her was a treat, just sometimes I had to wait. Such encouragement and hand-holding from the faculties was taking the students way ahead in their learning journey.

नमस्कार. २००६ चा नोव्हेंबर! दिवाळी सुट्ट्यांमध्ये परभणीला गेलो. कर्वे महाविद्यालयाचं वेळापत्रक तसं खूपच दाटीवाटीचं. त्यामुळे अगदी चार दिवस सुट्ट्या होत्या. पण सुट्ट्यांमध्येही कॉलेजची आठवण येत होती. तीन- चार महिन्यांची अभ्यासाची एक लय तयार झाली होती. सगळी भट्टी जुळून आली होती. कॉरपोरेट ऑफिसेसमध्ये कसं‌ कर्मचार्‍याना हवहवसं वाटेल असं वातावरण असतं, तसं तिथे होतं. त्यामुळे सुट्ट्याही सुट्ट्या वाटल्या नाहीत. इतकंच काय, पण हॉस्टेलवर रविवारचे दिवसही कठिणच जायचे.

पहिल्या सत्राच्या परीक्षेतत चांगले गुण मिळाले. रिसर्चमध्येही चांगले मिळाले. फिल्ड वर्कचीच थोडी चिंता होती. कारण तिथे गुण फार वेगळ्या प्रकारे दिले जातात. फिल्ड वर्कच्याही एजन्सी कॉन्फरन्सेस व आढावा बैठका व्हायच्या. पुढचं सत्र सुरू झालं आणि अभ्यासक्रमाने वेग घेतला. संशोधनाचा सिद्धांत विषय शिकवून झाल्यावर प्रॅक्टीकलची सुरूवात झाली. त्यासाठी रिसर्च लॅबमध्ये पूर्ण वर्गाला मिळून एक संशोधन प्रकल्प आधी करायचा होता. पुण्यातल्या पीएमटी वाहतूक सेवेबद्दल एक सर्वेक्षण करायचं ठरलं. सगळ्यांनी मिळून त्याची प्रश्नावली- व्याप्ती, सँपलिंग युनिव्हर्स, पद्धती इ. ठरवलं. छोटे गट करून कामं विभागून घेतली. वेगवेगळ्या ठिकाणी जाऊन प्रवाशांना प्रश्न विचारले. पुढे त्याचं सामुहिक विश्लेषण- अहवाल लेखन इ. गोष्टी होत गेल्या. आणि ते होत असतानाच प्रत्येकाने त्याच्या- तिच्या संशोधनाचे विषयही व प्रस्ताव बनवायला सुरू केले. त्यासाठी रिसर्च मार्गदर्शक फॅकल्टीसुद्धा दिले गेले. 

मी लातूरमधल्या घन कचरा व्यवस्थापनावरच्या संस्थेचं काम संशोधनासाठी घेतलं. उज्ज्वला मसदेकर मॅडम माझ्या रिसर्च मार्गदर्शिका होत्या. उद्दिष्ट, व्याप्ती, गृहितके, माहितीचे घटक (items of information), नमूना निवड, संशोधन आराखडा (अन्वेषणात्मक/ वर्णनात्मक), संशोधन पद्धत (केस स्टडी) अशा गोष्टी लिहीणं, त्यावर मॅडमचे इनपुट घेऊन त्या फायनल करणं अशा गोष्टी सुरू झाल्या. रिसर्च गाईडव्यतिरिक्त प्रत्येक विद्यार्थ्याला एक व्यक्तिगत मार्गदर्शकही असायचे. त्या फॅकल्टीसोबतही अधून मधून कॉन्फरन्स व्हायची. माझ्यासाठी त्या भुमिकेत चित्रलेखा राजुस्कर मॅडम होत्या.

गट कार्य हा एक विषय तर होताच पण प्रत्यक्ष अभ्यास व अनेक असाईनमेंटस गटानेच व्हायच्या. एकत्रित अभ्यासाचे खूप फायदे होत होते. एकमेकांकडून शिकायला तर मिळत होतंच, पण चर्चाही खूप छान व्हायच्या. आणि मुख्य म्हणजे संवादाच्या स्वरूपामुळे कुठेही शिकणं बोजड होत नव्हतं. २००६ वर्षं संपता संपता सगळे शिक्षकेतर कर्मचारी, मामा लोकसुद्धा ओळखीचे झाले. आयुष्यभराची मैत्री अनेकांसोबत इथे जुळली. भरपूर मित्र- मैत्रिणी असलेलं वातावरण. त्यामुळे काही काही वेळेस प्रकरणं होऊन मुलींना मनस्तापही व्हायचे. आधी मुलींना मनस्ताप आणि नंतर त्या मुलांना! काहींना नंतर आयुष्यभरासाठी त्रास झाला! कारण त्यांचे जीवनसाथी इथे मिळाले! सिनियर्सकडून हेसुद्धा आम्ही हळुच शिकत गेलो! 

जानेवारी २००७ मध्ये एडव्हान्स ओरिएंटेशन व्हिजिटस होते. प्रत्येक स्पेशलायजेशनच्या विषयांवर काम करणार्‍या निवडक संस्थांना त्या त्या स्पेशलायजेशनच्या विद्यार्थ्यांची अभ्यास भेट असं स्वरूप होतं. ह्या भेटीसुद्धा छान होत्या. पण आता स्पेशलायजेशनचा फरक पडला! लेबर वेलफेअर (माझे ३ फिल्ड वर्क मित्र ह्याच स्पेशलायजेशनचे होते), मेडीकल अँड सायकॅट्रिक सोशल वर्क (MPSW) आणि फॅमिली चाईल्ड वेलफेअर (FCW) ह्या इतर मित्र- मैत्रिणींची सोबत इथे मिळणार नव्हती! ह्या भेटीही छान झाल्या. ह्या वेळेपर्यंत फॅकल्टी व मित्र- मैत्रिणींसोबत छान बाँडिंग झालं होतं. त्यामुळे येताना- जाताना चर्चा व गप्पा छान व्हायच्या. देहु गावमधील स्वच्छतेवर काम करणारी संस्था, जन वकालत अध्ययन विषयात काम करणारं एनकॅस (NCAS), शिक्षण व पर्यावरणावर काम करणारं CEE, जल संवर्धन विषयावर काम करणारी नागमणि मॅडमच्या मिस्टरांची- जॉय सरांची संस्था सोपेकॉम (Society for Promoting Participative Ecosystem Management- SOPPECOM) अशा संस्था विशेष लक्षात राहिल्या.  सोपेकॉम संस्थेची व्हिजिट म्हणजे अजिबातच सोपं काम नव्हतं. कारण सगळा विषय तांत्रिक आणि गुंतागुंतीचा. पण तरीही मजा आली. छान चर्चा सगळीकडे झाली. ह्या भेटीमध्येही  फॅकल्टीज कसं नियोजन करतात, कशी चर्चा घडवून आणतात, हेसुद्धा शिकण्यासारखं होतं. 

ह्या अभ्यास भेटी झाल्यानंतर लगेचच त्यावर दोन दिवसीय परिसंवाद होता. प्रत्येक स्पेशलायजेशनचा हा वेगळा होता. त्याचं आयोजन सिनियर्सनीच केलं होतं. पहिल्या दिवशी सिनियर्सनी अनेक विषय मांडले. त्यांच्या मध्य प्रदेश व छत्तीसगढच्या स्टडी टूअरमधील व्हिजिटस, निरीक्षणं, तिथे काम करणार्‍या संस्था ह्याबद्दल ते बोलले. पॉवरपॉईंट प्रेझेंटेशन्स, चर्चा, प्रश्नोत्तर असं स्वरूप. दुसर्‍या दिवशी आम्ही सादरीकरण केलं. सगळे जण बोललो. भेट दिलेल्या संस्थांच्या कामाबद्दल चर्चा झाली आणि त्याशिवाय चक्रीवादळ, त्सुनामी अशा आपत्तीवर मी सादरीकरण केलं. बोलायला सुरू करताना सिनियर्सनी टाळ्या वाजवून दिलेलं प्रोत्साहन अजून लक्षात आहे! माझ्या स्पेशलायजेशनच्या सिनियर्समध्ये परमेश्वर माझा गाववाला- परभणीचा होता. त्याशिवाय शिशिर सावंत, नागेश जाधव, योगिता साळवी, जो असेही चांगले ओळखीचे झाले होते. दुसर्‍या स्पेशलायजेशनचेही फ्रान्सिस (नेहमी I mean, I mean म्हणणारा)  व इतर काही ओळखीचे झाले होते. परिसंवादात सलग असं नाही, पण पीपीटीच्या मदतीने बोलता आलं! शिवाय काही प्रेझेंटेशन्स गटाची होतीच.

विद्यार्थ्यांच्या क्षमतांना मिळणारं असं प्रोत्साहन खूप बहुमोल असतं. कारण त्यामुळे हळु हळु शंका कमी होतात, आत्मविश्वास वाढत जातो. कोवळ्या वयामध्ये "अटेंशन किंवा दिलेलं लक्ष" ऊर्जा देतं. आणि ज्या गोष्टीला ही ऊर्जा मिळते, ती वाढते. अशाच प्रोत्साहनामुळे माझं लिहीण्याचं कौशल्य वाढत गेलं. मायदेव मॅडम लेक्चरमध्ये मराठी शब्द मला विचारायच्या. त्यामुळे चटकन प्रतिशब्द सांगण्याची आवड व क्षमता आली. आज मी मुख्यत: जे अनुवादाचं काम करतो, त्याची सुरूवात अशी तिथूनच झाली होती!

ह्या परिसंवादाच्या सुमारासच कॉलेजचं गॅदरिंग झालं! खूप धमाल होती! स्टेज डेकोरेशन रात्री जागून सुरू होतं! सिनियर्स व ज्युनियर्स मिळून करत होते. लोकगीतं, "आम्ही ठाकर ठाकर, ह्या रानाची पाखरं" सारखी चळवळीतली गीतं, भारुडं, वेगवेगळ्या वेषभुषा- केशभुषा, पारंपारिक वाद्य असा सगळा कार्यक्रम होता. सादरीकरणं होती. फॅकल्टीजसुद्धा सहभागी होत्या! काही विद्यार्थ्यांनी खूप उत्तम कला कृती सादर केल्या. फर्स्ट यीअर वेलकम कार्यक्रमामध्ये "जामिंग सेशन" काही असतं हे मला कळालं होतं. पण तेव्हा त्याचंही बर्डन वाटलं होतं. पण आता, सहा महिन्यांनंतर हॉस्टेल मित्रांनी सोशलायजेशन केल्याचा खूप फरक पडला! मित्रांसोबत सैराट पद्धतीचं नाचताना मलाच आश्चर्य वाटलं! नागमणी राव मॅडमचं "झुंजुमुंजू पहाट झाली" चळवळीचं गाणं आणि ठाकूर सरांचं "पुरानी जीन्स और गिटार" विशेष गाजलं! अनुराधा पाटील मॅडमचं "अशी पाखरं येती" गाणंही भावलं. तुफान जल्लोष आणि सुंदर आठवणी!  

पहिल्या टर्मनंतर फिल्ड वर्कमध्ये बावीकर मॅडमनी सुचवलेल्या गोष्टी करण्याचा प्रयत्न केला. बावीकर मॅडम हसत खेळत पण बरोबर टेक्निकलसुद्धा सांगायच्या. त्यानुसार एजन्सी प्रोफाईल बनवून झाली होती. नंतरच्या टप्प्यात लोहिया नगर, घोरपडे पेठ, गंज पेठ अशा वस्त्यांमध्ये भेटी होत्या. वस्तीतले वर्ग बघायचे व तिथल्या शिक्षक- शिक्षिकांसोबत संवाद असं स्वरूप होतं. त्यांच्या कामाचं निरीक्षण, त्यामध्ये येणार्‍या अडचणींवर उपाय सांगणं अशाही गोष्टी होत्या. मुलांसोबत काही कृती करायच्या होत्या. ह्या कामामध्ये मला पकड अशी मिळाली नाही. किंवा काही गोष्टी नेमक्या कशा करायच्या हे कळालं नाही. माझी मेहनत तर होती, पण मी बाकी चाचपडत होतो.  थोडं कसोटी क्रिकेट बॅटिंगसारखं वाटत होतं. त्यामुळे नंतर फिल्ड वर्क असेसमेंटच्या वेळी मला बावीकर मॅडमनी सांगितलं की, "तू सध्या मुलांसोबत काम करू नकोस. काही वर्षं थांब.” त्याचं थोडं वाईट वाटलं, पण आश्चर्य नाही वाटलं. नंतर कधी तो योग आलाही नाही. पुढे वेगळ्या संस्थांसोबत काम केलं आणि पुढे तर अनुवादात आलो. पण गेली काही वर्षं मुलांसोबत छोटे उपक्रम करत आहे व त्यांची शिबिरं घेत आहे. त्याचं श्रेय माझ्या मुलीला जातं! आणि मुलांसोबत "रॅपो बिल्ड" करण्यासाठी उपयोगी पडणारे वेगवेगळे आवाज शिकवणार्‍या माझ्या हॉस्टेलच्या मित्रांना!

कधी कधी व्हिजिटिंग फॅकल्टीचे लेक्चर्स किंवा वर्कशॉप्स असायचे. कर्वेचेच दोन माजी विद्यार्थी असलेले आनंद पवार ह्यांचं जेंडरवरचं वर्कशॉप आणि अनील शिदोरे सरांचं “प्रोजेक्ट मूनशॉट” लेक्चर विशेष लक्षात राहिले. प्रोजेक्ट मूनशॉटमध्ये व्यवस्थापन अगदी सुंदर प्रकारे सरांनी उलगडलं होतं. ...असं संस्मरणीय पहिलं वर्षं हळु हळु संपत आलं! फिल्ड वर्कच्या तुलनेत रिसर्चची गाडी व्यवस्थित सुरू झाली. एक एक स्टेज व्यवस्थित होत गेली. मसदेकर मॅडम छान सांगायच्या. त्यानुसार संदर्भ वाचन, सेकंडरी डेटा अभ्यास असं करून आराखडा बनवत गेलो.  नंतर नंतर तर मी त्यांना भेटायला जायचो व फाईल द्यायचो तेव्हा त्या चक्क येऊ नकोस म्हणायच्या आणि चेहरा लपवायच्या! त्यांच्यासोबतच्या व्यक्तिगत कॉन्फरन्सेसला मजा यायची. फक्त कधी कधी खूप वेळ थांबावं लागायचं! फॅकल्टीकडून मिळणारं असं प्रोत्साहन आणि अनेक विद्यार्थ्यांसाठी त्यांनी केलेलं hand-holding विद्यार्थ्यांना पुढे नेत होतं.
