Karve Days 10: Survey work in displaced villages near Narmada river

January 2008! Time of the college gathering. The gathering was a relief from the stress of all submissions and tasks! I could enjoy it well as I was sufficiently socialized by hostel friends since last one and a half year. Friends did many performances- the tradition attire, traditional songs and dances! Many wonderful performances were there. Povada, Bharud, folk songs. I remember the attire of Avinash Ravate. Of course, by then he had lost his long hair, like Dhoni of 2006! The new faces- the first years- they were quite known by this time and they also performed well. Everyone was so energetic and zestful. Sandeep Barve's songs- everyone liked them. And the last jamming session! We hostel boys had a jumping dance! Even after feeling tired, we did not stop. And there were those ones who were dancing with minimal movement so as to avoid fatigue! Those were the days!

The deadline for submitting the research thesis was 15th February. Till January, I was hopeful to finish it within the time. But come February, I realized that it was not going to be. Many tasks were pending. Many chapters were still to be finalized. Everything was to be finalized and then Masdekar madam was going to approve it. During this last stage of this work, the first year friend Amit Upamanyu helped greatly. Probably he  was the only person having a laptop on the hostel. I started writing the thesis chapters by using his laptop. Long nights started. We continued working late night by using songs from I- pod, someone's mobile and also FM radio! The research work was in the last stage- but the bus was missed! 

During this time, we, the students of Community Development had one field work opportunity. A survey work was going on near Narmada Bachao Movement area near Narmada river. Karve alumni Amulya Nidhi was working there. They wanted four persons and four students were selected- whose research work was at final stages. I got this opportunity with Manoj Margade, Budhaji Gawar and Santosh Rathod! We were to do survey work in those villages and hamlets. It was a 8- day field work. These villages were near Kasaravat Basavat near Narmada riverfront. The nearest town was Badvani! We four left Pune with a travels bus. We reached Jhulwaniya in wee hours and continued our journey through a jeep. This 8- day experience was so unique. All the villages were located close to the river. In the Monsoon, areas of the villages would submerge in the river. People's houses and farms- everything would submerge. That’s why there was agitation going on against Sardar Sarovar project. The survey questionnaire dealt with all these things- how much is the area, population, what's the extent of displacement, were they rehabilitated, where etc. Under the guidance of Amulya Nidhi, we went to many villages for filled the forms. We also observed their living conditions, their lifestyle, work of the organization etc. This organization was working on the grass root level. It was working for rural development, livelihood to the youth, tribal rights etc. It would impart information of Government schemes such as NREGA to the people.

The questionnaire was tricky and it was difficult to get proper information. But we could observe how people live, what challenges they face and how they manage. We were staying at Badvani and would go to villages with members of the organization. I and Santosh would go together. The other duo would go at other villages. Then we were doing reporting and diary writing. Also when we found time, we would do our research work also. Days passed. Due to the winter, the river appeared slightly distant from the villages. But we were disturbed with the thought- what would happen here in the Monsoon? Before leaving for field work, we would have our breakfast at Badwani town. There, we had Pohe for breakfast and its cost was just Rs. 1! During the field work, we were traveling to unique places and even witness true forest. We returned with great memories.

Santosh Rathod from our group was very unique. He belonged to a nomadic tribe. In his family, not many had learned as much. But he was passionate and driven. After appearing for entrance test at Karve Institute, we had traveled through the same bus. Later on we developed good friendship. He was known for his smiley face and cheerfulness. He was prompt for time and tasks, I learned during our study tour. When I was too tired due to pressure of submissions, I went to his room. There he showed me his file. He had collected so many things- news, articles and his notes. He also had drawn paintings and written poems. He had kept the file so neat. His work ethic and neatness made me think and I got inspired. The burden of the submission was gone and I got back to my work with new inspiration. Interestingly, he too was a vivid fan of Sehwag! So we had good friendship. 

Unfortunately, Santosh Rathod left us in 2012 when he had an accident. He would write his poems in the name of "Jakhmi Dil (wounded heart)" and then he left us to face this great sorrow. One friend of hostel was called as the soul of the hostel. If he was the soul, Santosh Rathod was surely the heart of the hostel!

कर्वेतले दिवस १०: नर्मदा किनार्‍याजवळच्या विस्थापित गावांमध्ये सर्वेक्षणाचं काम

२००८ चा जानेवारी महिना! कॉलेजमधलं दुसरं गॅदरिंग! गॅदरिंगमुळे सगळ्या सबमिशन्सचा आणि कामांचा ताण दूर झाला! गेल्या दीड वर्षामध्ये हॉस्टेलच्या मित्रांनी पुरेसं सोशलाईझ केल्यामुळे सगळ्या गोष्टींचा आनंद घेऊ शकलो. अनेकांनी पारंपारिक वेषभुषा केल्या, पारंपारिक गाणी व नृत्य सादर केली. पोवाडा, भारूड, लोकगीत असे परफॉर्मन्सेस झाले. अविनाश रावतेने छान वेशभुषा केली होती. पण त्याने त्याचे धोनीसारखे देखणे केस मात्र गमावले होते! ह्या वर्षी पहिल्या वर्षाचे नवीन चेहरे होते- तेही आता चांगले ओळखीचे झाले होते. सगळ्यांनी खूप उत्साहाने सादरीकरण केलं होतं. संदीप बर्वेची गाणी सगळ्यांना आवडली. शेवटच्या जॅमिंग सत्रात मजा आली! हॉस्टेल मित्रांसोबतचा उड्यांचा डान्स झाला! डान्स करता करता घाम आला तरी थांबवावासा वाटला नाही. काही जण असे मोजून मापून नाचत होते की कमीत कमी दमतील! काय ते दिवस होते!

१५ फेब्रुवारी संशोधनाचा प्रबंध सादर करण्याची डेडलाईन होती. जानेवारीपर्यंत वाटत होतं की जमेल. पण फेब्रुवारी सुरू झाला आणि हळु हळु ती वेळ चुकणार हे लक्षात आलं. अनेक गोष्टी बाकी होत्या. अनेक प्रकरणं फायनल व्हायची होती. सगळ्या गोष्टी फायनल करून त्याला मसदेकर मॅडमची मान्यता घ्यायची होती. ह्या संशोधनाच्या शेवटच्या टप्प्यावर पहिल्या वर्षाच्या अमित उपमन्यूने खूप साथ दिली. हॉस्टेलवर लॅपटॉप असलेला तो बहुतेक एकच असावा. त्याच्या लॅपटॉपमध्ये प्रबंधाचं लिखाण काम सुरू केलं. रात्र रात्र जागण्याचे दिवस सुरू झाले! आयपॉडवरची, कोणाच्या मोबाईलमध्ये असलेली गाणी आणि एफएम रेडिओ ऐकत काम सुरू झालं. शेवटच्या टप्प्यावर काम होतं पण डेडलाईनची बस चुकली ती चुकलीच! 

ह्याच सुमारास समुदाय विकास विभागाच्या मुलांसाठी एक फिल्ड वर्कची संधी आली. नर्मदा बचाओ आंदोलनाच्या परिसरातल्या एका संस्थेचं सर्वेक्षणाचं काम होतं. तिथे कर्वेचेच माजी विद्यार्थी अमुल्य निधी काम करत होते. ज्यांचे रिसर्च पुढे गेले आहेत, असे चार लोक निवडले गेले आणि मला त्यामध्ये जायची संधी मिळाली. मी, मनोज मरगडे, बुधाजी गवारी आणि संतोष राठोड हे ते चार जण! त्या परिसरातल्या गावांमध्ये- पाड्यांमध्ये सर्वेक्षण करायचं होतं. अगदी आठ दिवसांचं फिल्ड वर्क होतं. नर्मदा किनारी असलेल्या कसरावट बसावट परिसरात ही गावं होती. जवळचं मुख्य गाव होतं बडवानी! आम्ही चौघं ट्रॅव्हल्सने निघालो. पहाटे झुलवानियाला उतरलो आणि पुढे जीपचा प्रवास करत पोहचलो. हा आठ दिवसांचा अनुभव खूप वेगळा ठरला. ही सगळी गावं अशी होती जिथे पावसाळ्यात नदीच्या पाण्यामुळे क्षेत्र बुडीत होत होतं. तिथेच लोकांची घरं- शेतं होती. त्यामुळेच सरदार सरोवर प्रकल्पाविरुद्ध आंदोलन केलं जात होतं. सर्वेक्षणाची प्रश्नावली त्याबद्दलच होती- क्षेत्र किती, लोक किती, विस्थापन किती, पुनर्वसन मिळालं का किंवा कुठे मिळालं इ. इ. अमूल्य निधीच्या मार्गदर्शनानुसार वेगवेगळ्या गावांमध्ये जाऊन हे फॉर्म्स भरायचे होते. त्याशिवाय तिथलं राहणीमान, लोकांची परिस्थिती, संस्थेचं काम, हे सगळं बघायचं होतं. संस्था अगदी ग्रास रूटवर काम करणारी होती. ग्राम विकास, युवा रोजगार, आदिवासी हक्क अशा विषयांवर काम करणारी आणि नरेगासारख्या योजनांची माहिती लोकांना देणारी. 

प्रश्नावली थोडी गुंतागुंतीची होती आणि माहिती घ्यायला कठिण गेलं. पण लोक कसे राहतात, काय परिस्थितीत आहेत हे जवळून बघता आलं. बडवानीला राहण्याची सोय आणि रोज कार्यकर्त्यांसोबत वेगवेगळ्या गावी प्रवास असं काम होतं. माझ्यासोबत संतोष राठोड होता. दुसरे दोघे इतर गावांमध्ये जायचे. त्यानंतर केलेल्या कामाचं रिपोर्टिंग- डायरी लिहीणं हे काम. शिवाय वेळ मिळेल तेव्हा रिसर्चचं काम. भरभर दिवस गेले. हिवाळा असल्यामुळे नदी लांब दिसत होती. पण पावसाळ्यात इथे काय होत असेल हा प्रश्न अस्वस्थ करत होता. आम्ही राहायचो तिथे बडवानी गावात चक्क एक रूपयाचे पोहे मिळत होते! आणि तेही भरपूर. फिल्ड वर्कमध्ये खूप वेगळ्या परिसरात फिरायला मिळत होतं. खरं खुरं जंगलसुद्धा पाहायला मिळालं. अशा खूप वेगळ्या आठवणी घेऊन परत आलो. 

आमच्यासोबत असलेला संतोष राठोड खूप वेगळा होता. त्याचं कुटुंब भटकंती करणार्‍या समुदायातलं होतं. त्याच्या आधी कोणी जास्त शिकलेलं नव्हतं. पण त्याची जिद्द वेगळीच होती. आम्ही कर्वेच्या प्रवेश परीक्षेहून परत गेलो तेव्हा एकाच बसमध्ये होतो. नंतर हळु हळु छान मैत्री झाली होती. प्रसन्नचित्त आणि सगळ्यांना हसवणारा त्याचा स्वभाव. पण तरी तो वेळेच्या बाबतीत पक्का आणि कामाला चोख आहे, हे ह्या प्रवासात कळालं. एकदा सगळ्या सबमिशनच्या ताणामुळे "आत्ता काहीच करणं होत नाही," अशी स्थिती झाली तेव्हा त्याच्या रूममध्ये गेलो. तेव्हा त्याने त्याची एक फाईल दाखवली होती. खूप वेगवेगळी कात्रणं- वेगवेगळ्या विषयांवरची माहिती त्याने जपून ठेवली होती. शिवाय त्याने काढलेल्या नोटस, चित्रं, कविता असंही खूप होतं. त्याची काम करण्याची पद्धत आणि इतका नीटनेटकेपणा बघून मलाही प्रेरणा मिळाली. सबमिशनचं ओझं हलकं झालं आणि झोकून देऊन काम करायची प्रेरणा मिळाली. गंमत म्हणजे तोसुद्धा सेहवागचा चाहता! त्यामुळे छान मैत्री झाली. 

असा हा संतोष राठोड. दुर्दैवाने कर्वेतून बाहेर पडल्यावर काही वर्षांनी एका अपघातात तो सगळ्यांना सोडून गेला. "जख्मी दिल" नावाने कविता करणारा सगळ्यांना जख्मी करून गेला. हॉस्टेलवर एक मित्र खूप प्रसिद्ध होता. त्याला सगळे हॉस्टेल की जान म्हणायचे. तो जान असेल तर संतोष राठोड हॉस्टेलचं दिल होता!
