Experiencing Kumaon Himalaya 3: Satgarh- A dream village in Himalaya!

✪  Sky watching in severe cold weather
✪  Farms on slope, small houses and distant villages obscured by fog!
✪  Trekking in serene nature
✪  Saffron snow- peaks in the evening
✪  "Watch, the tiger is standing there!"

Satgarh! Woke up at 4:30 am on 5th December. So severe cold outside! Sky watching from the terrace is next to impossible! It is almost trying to settle on a Perth pitch. But the sky is so mesmerizing! So the sky defied the cold weather. Although the Moon is shining brilliantly, it is now low in the West. There is bright Jupiter near the Moon. Sirius is low towards South. In the East, there are many stars. The Ursa Major are rising high in the sky! The Leo constellation is clear. I set the mobile for astrophotography. Hands are shaking. But oh beauty! What a blissful dawn! Slowly the birds started chirping!

Satgarh! The village with 1900 m elevation. It snows here after January. Even now, it is so cold that even brushing the teeth is painful! Got the treat of a tea! Here, tea is not just about drinking. It is much more than that. Firstly we warm our hands, then warm our face with hot vapour! And then we slowly sip the tea! It is the first round! In the day, at least two digit rounds are there! I checked Satgarh temperature later on. At 8 am, it is 1 degree Celsius! In the dawn, it must have been more cold! Felt so good to be able to do sky watching in these conditions.

After the day progressed a little and after the second tea with breakfast, I left for some trekking. Here it is so beautiful everywhere that anywhere you go, it is serene only! I took the newly constructed Jeep road. Farms on the slope, small houses, the Sun arisen up and villages obscured by fog in the valley! Aha! And what to say about flowers! As I walked further, distant views became visible and the snow- peaks shining in soft Sunlight! Oh! I continued the Jeep road and then walked on the Dharchula highway. I walked freely. I took several photos while knowing that THIS cannot be captured. 

When I had traveled to Ajanta- Ellora caves and Devgiri fort with my daughter, she had stated that oh, this district belongs to squirrels! They are everywhere! Even a squirrel had come to her hand for eating sweets. In the same way, I feel this Pithauragarh district belongs to the puppies, my daughter’s favourite Alex being one of them! They are everywhere! I walked five kilometers and then returned back to the relative's place. In the day also, Dhwaj temple mountain, fields and forests! What a sight to watch! Cherry on top- the soft Sunshine and tea! 

During the day, it was all talking, tea, rest and enjoying the nature! Here, the days are short. There are mountains just near the village. So the Sun arrives one hour late and it again goes behind the mountain in the afternoon after 3 pm! It is warm only briefly in the afternoon. People do outside work. They look after the cattle, bring grass from outside the village and do some house work. Four years ago, here network was very scarce. Now it is very high speed. Some construction work is also going on in the village. Four years ago, google- pay was not working in Pithauragarh, now it works well here in Satgarh! 

In the evening, did a small trek with my relative in upper side of Satgarh. Once we reach the hill top, there is a small temple and a ground. The open space there lets us see wonderful sight! Panchachuli mountain peaks, OM Parvat and other peaks are visible! Through the binocular, it was a treat to enjoy! We started to return back just before darkness arrived. While returning, one thrilling incident happened! 

We were rapidly descending from the fields and approaching the house. My relative's house is almost the top- most house in the village. After his house, the forest and mountain start. As we were descending, a loud voice emerged. It appeared to be a bull’s bellowing. But back of the mind, I wondered was it a tiger’s roar? Because tigers come here! But then I dropped that thought. When we were just 300 meters behind the house, the relative- Navinji suddenly stopped and he started running and took me with him. He whispered, "See, the tiger is standing there!" In the field below us just 100 meter above the house, there is one yellowish and blackish animal standing firm! It is standing firm and it is not running away after noticing us! He said that had it been the fox, it would have run away. But it remained steady! That means it is a tiger! And here they are not uncommon. Due to fading light could not capture its photo or could not observe it through the binoculars. In two minutes, it moved and then disappeared behind trees! We then descended from another longer route. Navinji’s eyes were telling that it was surely not the fox!

We reached the house. Had another tea and then it was night! At 5:30 pm, it was all dark and stars are visible! I set my telescope and observed as long as I could- for around 45 minutes. Then set the mobile for capturing the sky. Here, people go to bed by as early as 6:30 pm! We decided tomorrow's plan. Tomorrow I will leave for Munsyari early in the morning. The jeep will pick up me from the road side below Satgarh. The route will be- Satgarh- Kanalichheena- Jauljibi- Madkot. I had participated in Uttarakhand relief work 12 years ago and I had gone to these villages only. Again tomorrow I will go to that area! Due to severe cold condition, I took layers of blankets and slept with curiousity for tomorrow.

कुमाऊँमधील रम्य भटकंती भाग ३: सत्गढ़- हिमालयाच्या कुशीतलं गाव

✪  कडक थंडीतलं आकाश दर्शन
✪  डोंगर उतारावरची शेती, छोटे घरं, आणि धुक्यात गुरफटलेली दरीतली गावं!
✪  नितांत सुंदर परिसरात केलेलं ट्रेकिंग
✪  संध्याकाळची केशरी हिमशिखरं
✪  "शेर! देखो वहाँ खड़ा है!"

सत्गड़! ५ डिसेंबरला पहाटे साडेचारला उठलो. कडक थंडी आहे! अक्षरश: गच्चीमध्ये आकाश दर्शनासाठी बसता येत नाहीय. जणू पर्थच्या मैदानात जम बसवण्याइतकं अवघड आहे. पण आकाशच इतकं संमोहक आहे की हळु हळु थंडीचा मारा थंड पडला! चंद्राचं राज्य असलं तरी आता तो मावळतीला कललाय. चंद्राच्या थोडा अलीकडे गुरू चमकतोय. व्याध दक्षिणेला क्षितिजालगत दिसतोय. पूर्वेला खूप जास्त तारे दिसत आहेत. सप्तर्षी चांगलेच वर येत आहेत. सिंह रास- मघा नक्षत्र, पूर्वा फाल्गुनी, उत्तरा फाल्गुनी दिसत आहेत. फोटोग्राफीसाठी मोबाईल सेट करून ठेवला. हात थड थड कापत आहेत. पण अहा! काय रम्य पहाट! हळु हळु पक्ष्यांचं कूजन सुरू झालं!

सत्गड़! १९०० मीटर उंचीवरचं गाव. इथे जानेवारीनंतर बर्फ पडतो. आत्ताही भयाण थंडी आहे. इतकी थंडी की, तोंड धुणं- चूळ भरणंही नकोसं वाटावं! उजाडल्यानंतर चहा घेतला. इथे चहा हा पिण्याहून खूप मोठा अनुभव आहे! आधी हात गरम करायचे. नंतर चेह-यावर वाफ घ्यायची! आणि मग हळु हळु चहा घ्यायचा. असा पहिला राउंड! दिवसभरात किमान दोन आकडी राउंडस नक्की होतात! नंतर सहज तपमान बघितलं तर दिसलं की, सकाळी आठ वाजताचं सत्गड़मधलं तपमान १ अंश सेल्सियस आहे! म्हणजे पहाटे अजून कमी असणार! व्वा! तासभर तरी आकाश दर्शन करता आल्याचा आनंद झाला.

थोडा दिवस वर आल्यावर आणि दुसरा चहा व नाश्ता झाल्यावर फिरायला बाहेर पडलो. इकडे कुठेही गेलो तरी रम्य परिसर! नव्याने झालेला जीपचा कच्चा रस्ता बघत बघत त्या दिशेने बाहेर पडलो. डोंगर उतारावरची शेती, छोटे घरं, दूरवर वर आलेला सूर्य आणि धुक्यात गुरफटलेली दरीतली गावं! अहा हा! आणि फुलं- झाडं तर खूप सुंदर. पुढे मोकळ्या जागेमधून दूरवरची दृश्य समोर आली‌ आणि सकाळच्या केशरी ऊन्हात चमकणारे हिम शिखरही दिसले! व्वा! कच्च्या रस्त्याने खाली उतरून धारचुला हायवेला आलो. मनसोक्त पायपीट केली. मन भरणार नाही हे माहिती असूनही फोटो घेतले. 

मुलीसोबत अजिंठा- वेरुळ- देवगिरी फिरलो होतो तेव्हा ती म्हणाली होती, अरे हा तर खारूताईंचा जिल्हा आहे! जिथे तिथे खारूताई! तिच्या हातावरसुद्धा खारूताई आली होती तेव्हा. तसा हा पिथौरागढ़ जिल्हा मला तिच्या लाडक्या ब्याऊंचा जिल्हा वाटतोय! तिच्या ऍलेक्ससारखेच ऍलेक्स सगळीकडे दिसत आहेत! तासभरात पाच किलोमीटर फिरलो आणि परत नातेवाईकांच्या घरी आलो. दिवसा समोरचा ध्वज मंदिराचा डोंगर, शेती, जंगल काय दिसतंय! कोवळं ऊन आणि चहा! 

दिवसभरात गप्पा, चहा, आराम आणि निसर्गाला न्याहाळण्याचा क्रम सुरू राहिला. इथे दिवस तसा छोटा आहे. समोरच डोंगर आहेत, त्यामुळे सूर्य एक तास उशीरा प्रकट होतो आणि दुपारी तीननंतर परत डोंगराआड जातो! दुपारच्या वेळीच ती थंडी थोडी कमी वाटते. लोक दुपारी बाहेरची कामं करतात. गुरांचा संभाळ, जंगलाजवळून गवत डोक्यावरून आणणं, काही घराची कामं असं करतात. चार वर्षांपूर्वी इथे नेटवर्क खूप विरळ होतं. आता अगदी जोरात आहे. गावात घरांची कामंही सुरू आहेत. चार वर्षांपूर्वी पिथौरागढ़मध्येही गूगल पे चालत नव्हतं. आता सत्गड़मध्येही चालतंय! 

दुपारी ध्वज मंदिराला जायचं होतं. पण माझ्या भाच्याला जमलं नाही. म्हणून नंतर माझ्या साडू- भाऊंबरोबर सत्गड़च्याच वरच्या भागात थोडा ट्रेक केला. डोंगर चढून वर गेलं की एक मैदान आहे. हनुमानाचं मंदिर आहे. तिथे मोकळ्या जागेतून विलक्षण नजारा दिसला! पंचाचुली शिखरं, ॐ पर्वत आणि इतर शिखरं खूप छान दिसत आहेत. बायनॅक्युलरमधून अजून छान दिसली आणि फोटोही घेता आले. अंधार पडायच्या आत तिथून परत यायला निघालो. येताना एक थरारक प्रसंग झाला! 

आम्ही वेगाने शेतांमधून खाली उतरत घराकडे येत होतो. साडू भाऊंचं घर सत्गडमधलं जवळ जवळ सगळ्यांत वरचंच घर. पुढे लगेच जंगल व डोंगर सुरू होतो. आम्ही उतरायला सुरूवात केली तेव्हा बैलाच्या हंबरण्यासारखा आवाज आला. आणि एका क्षणासाठी मनामध्ये अंधुक विचारही आला की, वाघाची गर्जना तर नसेल! कारण इथे वाघ येतो अधून मधून. पण लगेच तो विचार बाजूलाही ठेवला. चालता चालता फोटो घेत उतरत राहिलो.  घरापासून जेमतेम ३०० मीटर अलीकडे असताना साडू भाऊ एकदम थांबले आणि मला हाताला धरून धावायला लागले. त्यांनी हळु आवाजात मला सांगितलं, "शेर! देखो वहाँ खड़ा है!" खाली शेतात आणि घराच्या अगदी वर १०० मीटर अंतरावर खराच एक काळपट पिवळा मोठा प्राणी दिसत होता. आणि तो स्थिर होता. आम्हांला बघूनही पळाला नाही. ते पुढे म्हणाले की, कोल्हा असता तर पळून गेला असता. पण हा स्थिर उभा आहे, म्हणजेच तो वाघ आहे! आणि इथे तसे वाघ व इतर प्राणी काही नवीन नाहीत! अंधार पडल्यामुळे फोटो घेता आला नाही किंवा बायनॅक्युलरनेही बघता आलं नाही. दोन मिनिटांत तो हललेला दिसला व नंतर झाडीत दिसेनासा झाला! आम्ही नंतर लांबच्या वाटेने खाली उतरलो. साडू भाऊंच्या नजरेतून जाणवत होतं की, तो कोल्हा नव्हता!

घरी पोहचलो, चहा घेतला आणि रात्रच झाली! अगदी साडेपाच वाजता पूर्ण अंधार आहे आणि तारे दिसत आहेत! थंडी सहन होईल तितका वेळ म्हणजे अर्धा- पाऊण तास दुर्बीण सेट करून आकाश दर्शन केलं. नंतर मग मोबाईल फोटोग्राफी सुरू केली. इथे रात्री साडे- सहा- सातपर्यंत नीजानीज होते! संध्याकाळी उद्याचा कार्यक्रम ठरवला. उद्या सकाळी लवकर मुन्स्यारीला जायला निघेन. खाली रोडवरूनच थेट जाणारी जीप मिळेल. सत्गड़- कनालीछीना- जौलजिबी- मदकोट अशा रस्त्याने जायला मिळेल. बारा वर्षांपूर्वी उत्तराखंड मदत कार्यामध्ये सहभाग घेतला होता तेव्हा ह्याच गावांमध्ये फिरलो होतो. उद्या परत तिथे जायला मिळणार! कडक थंडीमुळे घेतलेल्या रजाई- पांघरुणासोबत ह्या उत्सुकतेसह निद्राधीन झालो.
