Beginning of the second year in "Karve Institute of Social Service"! July 2007! The first year was more generic- basic aspects of social work were taught. The second year was specialized. It was different for each specialization. More lectures belonged to the specialization topics. Common subjects and collective content got reduced. Henceforth, the specialized study, field work and research based on this process got pace. I was told to do field work with an agency working towards rural development. I started traveling to villages in Pune district. I came to know about new places and new dimensions of work. The field work days were hectic. Friends from other specialization got engaged in their own routine. The Community Development (URCD) Department's field work would take place on consecutive days- Monday- Tuesday. Others mostly would go on Tuesday and Friday. As a result, the Fridays would feel very lonely. We became seniors and now we had juniors.

The second year is decisive in this course. Many students got clarity about their career path or vision in the second year. Asha from my specialization- she was assigned to one agency working in red light area. From there, her work in this field started and it continues even after 19 years. Compared to the first year, I was feeling this change in myself. In the first year, I was much introvert. But due to the company of the boys and the girls, I attained courage to play on the front foot. I started participating in all activities. I wanted to join the Student Forum and I was given that opportunity. Many activities in the college was organized by this Forum. It had its own year long planning and preparation. Members of the Forum would be given different responsibilities. Their meeting would take place once in a while. The first meeting took place on a tiring afternoon. Professor Nagmani Rao Madam, Director Deepak Walokar sir and others were there. Many topics were discussed. It went on and on. I still remember these meetings and the coffee one would get there! 

My field work started under the guidance of Nagmani madam. I started visiting to the agency working towards rural development. I was to understand their work, their focus and their activities in the villages. I was to do tasks under the supervision of one guide there. Traveling increased, but it was equally enjoyable. We also had new subjects in the lectures. Social legislation and Policy related topics were introduced. The legislation subject was technical and monotonous. But Nagmani madam would make it simple by sharing many incidents- social cases and examples. She would also say that due to the very nature of the subject, even she has to continuously revise to teach it. The policy related subject was taught by Professor Anjali Maydeo. Her narration, elaboration and discussion was worth listening. 

In the specialized lectures, topics such as various components of development, five year plans, cooperative sector, Gandhain Swaraj, reforms in the agriculture sector, forest rights etc. were discussed. With all this, research work was also taking place. I was having regular conferences with Ujjwala Masdekar madam. We also would have group conferences of all her research students for collective review.

Thursday 9 am would be the deadline to submit the diary and report for the field work. My file would be mostly ready by Wednesday. Still I can see those pages! It was so satisfying to see detailed comments of the faculty on the report written by me! She would suggest many improvements and also appreciate good things. Both these things are so crucial in the learning process of the students! Also she would make the students clear about further work. She would explain again to those who would not understand it.

Despite of the hectic schedule, this year was the best year of my college days. After completion of one year, we had developed good friendships with everyone. I had a recognition as a student. Those charming days! I still lively see those days. During one evening in September in a hotel I saw Indian T-20 team lifting the world cup! I had a small radio with me and I would sometimes listen cricket commentary. I was also the source of news. Interactions with other specialization friends became slightly infrequent. But at the same time, the juniors- the first year students also were acquainted. Some became friends too. 

We had done one small survey in some localities as told by Maydeo madam. Along with us, first year students were also there. Kishor from my batch, Dada Dadas, Vidya, Rupesh Pawar were there. We had good discussion in one organization. I also had good friendship with Karuna, Smita, Amit Upamanyu and others. And of course, the juniors from my specialization and the hostel mates. We second- year students also had some community assignments. It was related to doing profiling of the community facilities. We would do these assignments in group. I had gone to Katraj area in Pune along with Ashruba, Pravin and Triveni. I also had done one survey assignment in Gokhalenagar community. Such group tasks and travel with friends were a constant.

With many such memories, the second year progressed. We were going to Rajasthan for a study tour  in October. We the students were responsible for its planning. In those days, one would need to go to Railway station or a reservation counter for booking a ticket. It also involved sending mails to all those organizations, taking their appointment, doing minute planning about discussions and subject. Nagmani madam was facilitating it and so we were learning these things. Such were those days! In those days, sometimes I would miss my lunch due to pressing submissions. But it would not make any difference! Such was the atmosphere there. How enriching this journey was!

"कर्वे समाज सेवा संस्थेतल्या" दुसर्‍या वर्षाची सुरूवात! जुलै २००७! पहिलं वर्षं बरचसं जनरिक होतं- समाज कार्याचे प्राथमिक पैलू शिकवले जात होते. दुसरं वर्षं हे स्पेशलाईज्ड होतं. प्रत्येक स्पेशलायजेशननुसार बराच बदल होता. जास्त तासही स्पेशलायजेशनचेच. सगळ्यांचे समान विषय व एकत्रित घटक कमी झाले. इथून पुढे स्पेशलायजेशनचं अध्ययन, फिल्ड वर्क व त्याच प्रक्रियेवर आधारित संशोधनाने पुढचा वेग घेतला. मला ग्राम विकासावर काम करणार्‍या संस्थेमध्ये काम करायला सांगितलं गेलं. पुणे जिल्ह्यातल्या गावांमध्ये प्रवास सुरू झाले. नवीन ठिकाणं- विकासाचे नवीन आयाम कळायला लागले. फिल्ड वर्कचे दिवस त्यामुळे हेक्टिक झाले. इतर स्पेशलायजेशनचे मित्र- मैत्रिणी त्यांच्या वेगळ्या रूटीनमध्ये व्यस्त झाले. समुदाय विकास (URCD) विभागाचं दुसर्‍या वर्षीचं फिल्ड वर्क सोमवार- मंगळवार असं सलग सुरू झालं. बाकी सगळे शक्यतो मंगळवार व शुक्रवारी जायचे. सेकंड यीअरचा शुक्रवार त्यामुळे खूप शांत शांत वाटायचा. आम्ही सिनियर झालो आणि आमचे ज्युनियर्स- नवीन विद्यार्थीसुद्धा आले.

दुसरं वर्षं ह्या अभ्यासक्रमातलं निर्णायक. कित्येक जणांना त्यांच्या पुढच्या करीअरची दिशा किंवा मार्ग दुसर्‍या वर्षी मिळाला. माझ्या स्पेशलायजेशनची आशा- तिला फिल्ड वर्कला रेट लाईट एरियात काम करणारी एक संस्था मिळाली. आणि तिथून त्या क्षेत्रामध्ये तिचं काम सुरू झालं ते अजून १९ वर्षांनंतरही चालू आहे. पहिल्या वर्षीच्या तुलनेत मला स्वत:मध्ये हा बदल जाणवत होता की, पहिल्या वर्षी मी बराच अंतर्मुख होतो. पण मित्र- मैत्रिणींच्या सोबतीमुळे दुसर्‍या वर्षी अगदी फ्रंट फूटवर येऊन खेळण्याची हिंमत आली. त्यामुळे जमेल तिथे कॉलेजातही सहभाग घ्यायला सुरूवात केली. त्यामध्ये स्टुडंट फोरममध्ये प्रवेश घ्यावासा वाटला व ती संधी मिळालीसुद्धा. कॉलेजातले अनेक उपक्रम विद्यार्थी मिळून आयोजित करायचे. त्याचंसुद्धा वर्षभराचं नियोजन असायचं- तयारी असायची. स्टुडंट फोरममध्ये असायचे त्यांना वेगळी जवाबदारी दिली जायची. स्टुडंट फोरमची अधून मधून मीटींग व्हायची. पहिली मीटिंग कॉलेज एका थकवाणा-या दुपारी झाली. प्रा. नागमणी राव मॅडम, डायरेक्टर दीपक वालोकर सर व इतर जण होते. खूप विषय चर्चेत आले. खूप उशीरही झाला. ह्या मीटींग्ज व तिथे मिळणारी कॉफी लक्षात राहिली! 

नागमणी मॅडमच्या मार्गदर्शनात माझं फिल्ड वर्क सुरू झालं. ग्राम विकासावर काम करणार्‍या संस्थेमध्ये जायला सुरूवात झाली. ते काम करतात ते विषय समजून घ्यायचे, गावांमधलं त्यांचं काम समजून घ्यायचं व तिथले गाईड सांगतील तसं काम करायचं, हे स्वरूप होतं. दगदग वाढली पण मजाही तितकीच यायची. त्याबरोबर कॉलेजातले विषयही बदलले. सामाजिक विधी (सोशल लेजिस्लेशन) आणि धोरण (पॉलिसी) संबंधित हे दोन महत्त्वाचे नवीन विषय होते. कायद्याचा विषय तसा रुक्ष व टेक्निकल. पण नागमणी मॅडम वेगवेगळे प्रसंग- सामाजिक खटले- उदाहरणं सांगून तो सोपा करायच्या. आणि हेसुद्धा म्हणायच्या की, विषय तसा खूप गुंतागुंतीचा व माहिती आधारित आहे, त्यामुळे मलासुद्धा सतत उजळणी करून शिकवावं लागतं. धोरण संबंधित विषय प्रा. अंजली मायदेव मॅडम शिकवायच्या. त्यांची मांडणी, निवेदन आणि विवेचन ऐकण्यासारखं असायचं. 

स्पेशलायजेशनमध्ये विकासाच्या वेगवेगळ्या पैलूंवर चर्चा, पंच वार्षिक योजनांचा अभ्यास, सहकारी क्षेत्र, गांधीजींचा स्वराज, शेतीतील सुधारणा, वन हक्क अशा वेगवेगळे घटक असायचे. हे सुरू असताना रिसर्चचंही काम पुढे जात होतं. त्याच्यासाठीही उज्वला मसदेकर मॅडमसोबत नियमित कॉन्फरन्सेस व्हायच्या. त्यांच्या सगळ्या विद्यार्थ्यांचा एकत्रित आढावा घेण्यासाठी ग्रूप कॉन्फरन्सेसही व्हायच्या. 

फिल्ड वर्क झाल्यावर त्याची डायरी व रिपोर्ट पूर्ण करण्यासाठी गुरूवारी सकाळी ९ ही डेडलाईन असायची. माझी फाईल शक्यतो बुधवारीच तयार होऊन जायची. अजूनही फाईलची पानं डोळ्यांपुढे येतात. आपण लिहीलेल्या रिपोर्टवर बारकाईने वाचून मॅडमच्या कमेंटस येतात, ही किती सुखद गोष्ट असायची! सुधारणासुद्धा त्या सांगायच्या व जे योग्य आहे, त्याचं कौतुकही करायच्या. विद्यार्थ्यासाठी अध्ययन प्रक्रियेमध्ये दोन्ही गोष्टी खूप मोलाच्या! त्याशिवाय त्या पुढच्या कामांसाठी स्पष्टता द्यायच्या. ज्यांना लवकर कळायचं नाही त्यांना परत परत सांगायच्या.

खूप धावपळ होत असली तरी हे वर्षं उच्च शिक्षणातलं माझं सर्वोत्तम वर्षं ठरलं. कॉलेजमध्ये एक वर्ष झाल्यामुळे सगळ्यांसोबत छान मैत्री झाली होती. विद्यार्थी म्हणून एक ओळख निर्माण झाली होती. असे ते मंतरलेले दिवस. त्या वर्षातले अनुभव अजूनही डोळ्यांपुढे येतात. सप्टेंबरमधल्या एका संध्याकाळी हॉटेलात भारतीय टी- २० टीमने वर्ल्ड कप जिंकल्याचं बघितलं! हॉस्टेलवर माझ्याकडे रेडिओवर कॉमेंटरी कधी कधी ऐकायला मिळायची. बातम्यासुद्धा त्यावर कळायच्या. इतर स्पेशलायजेशनच्या मित्र- मैत्रिणींच्या भेटी थोड्या कमी झाल्या होत्या. पण त्याबरोबर आमचे ज्युनिअर्स- पहिल्या वर्षीचे नवीन विद्यार्थीही ओळखीचे झाले. काही जण त्यांच्यातलेही जवळचे मित्र झाले. 

मायदेव मॅडमच्या सांगण्यानुसार काही वस्त्यांमध्ये जाऊन एक छोटं सर्वेक्षण केलं होतं. त्यामध्ये सेकंड यीअर्ससोबत फर्स्ट यीअर्सही होते. माझ्या बॅचचा किशोर, दादा दडस, विद्या, रूपेश पवार असे होते त्यात. तेव्हा एका संस्थेमध्ये छान चर्चा झाली होती. त्याशिवाय करूणा, स्मिता, अमित उपमन्यू अशा काही जणांशी छान मैत्री झाली.  स्पेशलायजेशनचे ज्युनिअर्स तर असायचेच. हॉस्टेलवरही पहिल्या वर्षवाल्यांसोबत छान मैत्री झाली.  शिवाय सेकंड यीअर सीडीच्यासुद्धा काही वस्तीतल्या असाईनमेंटस होत्या. वस्तीमध्ये जाऊन तिथल्या सोयी- सुविधांचं प्रोफाईलिंग करणं असं काम होतं. सीडीचे विद्यार्थी गटा- गटाने करायचे. मी, अश्रूबा, प्रवीण, त्रिवेणी असे कात्रजच्या वस्तीत गेलो होतो. त्याशिवाय मी गोखलेनगरजवळच्या वस्तीमध्येही एक सर्वेक्षण केलं होतं. मित्र- मैत्रिणींसोबत असे छोटे प्रवास व्हायचे.

अशा अनेक आठवणींसह कर्वेमधला दुसरा पावसाळा संपत आला. ऑक्टोबरमध्ये राजस्थानमध्ये अभ्यास दौरा (स्टडी टूअर) जाणार होता. त्याचं नियोजन आम्हां विद्यार्थ्यांनाच करायचं होतं. तेव्हा रेल्वेचं तिकीट बूक करायला स्टेशनवर किंवा आरक्षण केंद्रात जावं लागायचं. सगळ्या संस्थांना मेल पाठवून त्यांची वेळ घेणं, दौर्‍याचं सूक्ष्म नियोजन, चर्चा व विषय, निरीक्षणं असा सगळा भाग होता. नागमणी मॅडमकडून तेसुद्धा शिकायला मिळायचं.  त्या दिवसांमध्ये एखाद्या वेळी जर सबमिशनमुळे जेवणासाठी जायला वेळच नाही मिळाला तरी काही बिघडत नसायचं. असे ते दिवस होते! असा हा अतिशय समृद्ध करणारा प्रवास होता!
