Experiencing Kumaon Himalaya 4: Towards thrilling Munsyari!

I left Satgarh on the dawn of 6th December. It is just daylight and the jeep arrived. Aditya dropped me on the road. I took the back seat. I have my telescope and binocular with me. From Satgarh Munsiyari is not much- 108 kms. But entire the route is mountainous with difficult terrain! Therefore around 4-5 hours are needed. The continuously turning road. In order to avoid vomiting, I decided that I would not eat anything till I reach Munsiyari. I had followed this during Tanakpur- Pithauragarh journey also. My experience tells me that it is useful.

The jeep took Pithauragarh- Dharchula highway! Villages such as Kanalichheena, Merthi, Ogla, Jauljibi- very well known! I have been here many times. Due to severe cold, all windows are closed. But the glasses are revealing colossal views outside! Nepal, just on the far side of Kaliganga! The jeep turned towards left after crossing the bridge of Gori Ganga river. Now came the villages- Gharudi, Lumti, Chami and others where I had worked for some days with Maitri organization after 2013 floods. It was a hugely unique experience. At one point, we had to cross a ravaging water stream with the support of just one wooden bridge. Oh, I had come for relief, but I am myself getting trapped here, I had thought. We had traveled in many villages, had conducted camps, distributed ration and we also had to walk a lot by crossing roaring water streams at many places! Unforgettable experiences they were. In many villages, the rivers had created havoc. Many persons from Maitri organization had worked here for many months. Now I am going on the same road with a very distinct purpose! All those memories popped up!

Once Jauljibi was left behind, the road deteriorated. Chami and Lumati villages were crossed. Before Madkot, the terrain was much treacherous. Roaring Gori Ganga river just near the road! But now, it is relatively silent. At some points the road is so narrow and it also has waterfalls! After some distance, it just became more difficult. Hardly any trucks or buses would be going through this road! Even crossing of two Jeeps is difficult. Road construction is going on at some places. The road crossed one mountain, crossed the river and took left turn. I am thinking that after Madkot, there would be good road, but no. The road is extremely tough! It is good that I did not take any breakfast. Some passengers are vomiting continuously! After a long time, the driver took a break. What a great region this is! Interior Himalaya!

After crossing the river, again the ghat started. Now the road is climbing and it will climb till Munsyari! Slowly the road ascended so much that now the river is looking so small! Scenes that make you speechless! Small villages in the mountains! And the driver was taking maximum number of people and also their luggage! Pahari songs! 

Finally the jeep reached Munsyari at around 11 am! As I had not eaten, I did not have any trouble. I had got contact of Mr. Gupta from a friend of Navinji. I met him and he suggested a good homestay.  This hotel room- Saumya homestay had open terrace- excellent for sky watching! On top of it, it has excellent views of Pancha chuli mountain peaks! Oh! And it is in the main town, so food and tea is readily available! After taking ample tea and breakfast and meeting with Gupta ji, I went to the homestay. In the afternoon, it is less cold. But the night would be great! What a place this is! Wow! And my breakfast hotel is having excellent view of the mountains! It is like face to face with the peaks!

Munsyari! A tourist place and small but crowded village! Towering mountains and steep valleys! Here, the night will be very early. So did not take much rest in the afternoon and left for visiting Nanda Devi temple at four. It is around 2 kms from here and it will be a small trek. Road is really scenic as expected! The road to snow- peaks! Silent road, trees and beautiful views! The temple has a good garden with great views. After taking many photos and enjoying the views, returned back. I have to reach the room before it is dark! Also I will capture the red coloured mountains at the time of Sunset!

When the Sun was hidden by the mountains, coldness started to increase. I set the telescope and also invited the hotel persons. I captured photos of the reddish mountain peaks! By 5:30 pm, stars are visible! Capella (Brahmhruday) and Aldebaran (Rohini) emerged just near the Pancha Chuli peaks! Then the bright Jupiter. As it was full Moon just two days ago, the Moon also arose soon. The Moonrise from behind the snow- peaks! Whoa! I continued observing the sky for some time. Plenty of faint stars are visible! Andromeda galaxy is easily captured in a photo! I had my supper and set the mobile for all night photography. I continued sky watching for some time and then by 9 pm, I went to bed. Dawn- sky is goona be excellent! Certainly, I can enjoy sky watching even in this cold! And it will be great sky!

कुमाऊँमधील रम्य भटकंती भाग ४: रोमांचक मुन्स्यारीच्या वाटेवर!

६ डिसेंबरच्या पहाटे सत्गडवरून निघालो. जेमतेम उजाडायला लागलं आहे आणि जीप यायची वेळ झाली. आदित्यने मला खाली रोडवर सोडलं. सगळ्यांत मागच्या सीटवर बसून निघालो. सोबत टेलिस्कोप आणि बायनॅक्युलर असल्यामुळे ते सामान माझ्यासोबतच ठेवलं. सत्गडवरून मुन्सियारी अंतराने कमी म्हणजे फक्त १०८ किमी आहे. पण वाटेत सगळा पहाड़ी प्रदेश आणि बिकट रस्ता! त्यामुळे जायला निदान ४-५ तास तरी लागणारच. वळणा वळणाचा रस्ता! उलटीची भिती नको म्हणून पोहचेपर्यंत काहीच खायचं नाही असं ठरवलं. टनकपूर- पिथौरागढ़ प्रवासातही उपास केला होता. त्याचा उपयोग होतो, असा माझा अनुभव होता.

पिथौरागढ़- धारचुला हायवेने जीप निघाली! कनालीछीना, मेर्थी, ओगला, जौलजिबी अशी गावं तशी ओळखीचीच. अनेक वेळेस इथे येणं झालं आहे. कडक थंडीमुळे बंद असलेल्या काचांमधूनही बाहेरचा विराट नजारा जाणवतोय! कालीगंगेच्या पलीकडे नेपाळ! जौलजिबीला गोरीगंगा नदीचा पूल ओलांडून गाडीने डावा रस्ता घेतला. इथून पुढेच ती गावं होती. घरूडी, मनकोट, लुमती, चामी अशी जिथे २०१३ च्या पूरानंतर मदत कार्यासाठी मैत्री संस्थेच्या टीमसोबत काही‌ दिवस काम करता आलं होतं. फार वेगळा अनुभव होता तो. एका टप्प्यावर तर एक रौरावता धबधबा केवळ एका फळीसारख्या पुलावरून ओलांडावा लागला आणि मदत कार्यासाठी येऊन मीच इथे अडकतो की काय, असं वाटलं‌ होतं. तेव्हाचे त्या गावांमधले प्रवास, अनेक ठिकाणी झालेली शिबिरं आणि रेशन वाटप आणि पुढे अनेक ठिकाणी धबधब्यांमध्ये वाहणारी नदी ओलांडून केलेले प्रवास! खूप विलक्षण अनुभव होते. अनेक गावांमध्ये नद्यांनी मोठा विध्वंस केला होता. खूप नुकसान झालं होतं. मैत्रीतल्या अनेक जणांनी तर अनेक महिने इथे काम केलं होतं. आता अगदी वेगळ्या निमित्ताने माझं त्याच रस्त्यावरून जाणं होतंय! त्या सगळ्या आठवणी मनात दाटून येत आहेत.  

जौलजिबी मागे पडलं तसा रस्ता हळु हळु बिघडत जातोय. चामी, लुमती अशी गावं मागे पडली. मदकोटच्या आधी खूप दुर्गम भाग लागला. बाजूलाच खळाळत वाहणारी गोरी गंगा! पण ह्यावेळी पात्र शांत वाटतंय. काही ठिकाणी अगदी अरुंद रस्ता आणि कुठे कुठे रस्त्यावर वाहतं पाणी! थोड्या अंतरानंतर तर रस्ता अगदीच बिकट झाला. इतका की, इथून ट्रक किंवा बससुद्धा सध्या जात नसणार असं वाटतंय. दोन जीप्ससुद्धा कशा बशा एकमेकींना ओलांडत आहेत! काही ठिकाणी रस्त्याचं काम सुरू आहे. डोंगरातून जाऊन नंतर नदी ओलांडून रस्ता पैलतीरावर आला. कदाचित मदकोटनंतर चांगला असेल असं वाटलं होतं. पण रस्ता बिकटच आहे. मी काहीही नाश्ता केला नाही ते बरंच झालं, कारण काही प्रवासी सतत उलटी करत आहेत! खूप वेळाने जीप थोडा वेळ थांबली तेव्हा आसमंत नीट बघता आला. व्वा! हिमालयाच्या किती आत आहे जी जागा!

नदी ओलांडल्यानंतर थोड्या वेळाने परत घाट रस्ता सुरू झाला. नक्की, आता मुन्सियारीपर्यंत सलग चढ असणार. बघता बघता नदी खूप मागे पाताळात राहिली आणि रस्ता वर चढत गेला! अवाक् करणारा परिसर! डोंगरातली छोटी छोटी गावं! आणि शक्य त्या सगळ्या लोकांना व पोचवणारा व त्यांचं सामानही नेणारा जीप ड्रायव्हर! पहाडी गाणी! सत्गडवरून सकाळी ७ ला निघालेली जीप ११ वाजण्याच्या सुमारास मुन्सियारीमध्ये पोहचली! पोट हलकं असल्यामुळे काहीच त्रास न होता पोहचलो. सत्गडच्या नवीनजींच्या ओळखीतून इथल्या एका माणसाची ओळख मिळाली होती. त्या गुप्ताजींना भेटलो. त्यांनी एक चांगला होमस्टे सुचवला. आकाश दर्शनासाठी मोकळी गच्ची आणि अगदी समोर पंचाचुली आणि इतरही हिमशिखरं! वा! शिवाय मुख्य गावातच आहे, त्यामुळे जेवण- चहा जवळच मिळेल. मस्त चहा, नाश्ता आणि गप्पा झाल्यावर त्या सौम्या होमस्टेमध्ये गेलो. दुपारच्या ऊन्हात थंडी कमी वाजतेय. पण रात्री मजा येणार! पण काय ठिकाण आहे हे! अहा हा! आणि बाजूच्याच हॉटेलमध्ये आत गेल्यावर तर अजून सुंदर व्ह्यू मिळतोय! अगदी पंचाचुली शिखरांच्या सत्संगात असल्यासारखं‌ वाटतंय!

मुन्सियारी! पर्यटकांमुळे गजबजलेलं आणि वस्ती वाढलेलं पण तरी छोटसंच गांव! चहु बाजूंनी उंच पर्वत आणि द-या! इथे रात्र खूप लवकर पडणार. म्हणून दुपारी जास्त आराम न करता चार वाजताच नंदा देवी मंदिर बघायला निघालो. इथून साधारण दीड- दोन किलोमीटर अंतरावर असेल. म्हणजे एक छोटा ट्रेकसुद्धा होईल. अपेक्षेप्रमाणे रस्ता खूपच सुंदर आहे! अगदी हिमशिखरांकडे नेणारी वाट वाटेल असा! शांत रस्ता, दुतर्फा झाडं आणि नजारे! मंदिरामध्येही छान बाग आहे आणि दृश्यं सुंदर दिसत आहेत. मनसोक्त फोटो काढून आणि दृश्यांचा आनंद घेऊन परत निघालो. अंधार पडण्याच्या आत होम स्टेमध्ये पोहचायचं आहे आणि आकाश दर्शनाची सुरूवात करायची आहे! त्याआधी अर्थातच संध्याकाळची शिखरांवरची लालिमासुद्धा टिपायची आहे!

सूर्य डोंगराआड गेल्यावर थंडी वाढायला लागली. दुर्बीण सेट केली. तिथल्या हॉटेलवाल्यांनाही सांगितलं.  तेही बघायला येतो म्हणाले. सूर्य मावळताना लालसर होणा-या हिमशिखरांचे फोटो घेतले. आणि साडेपाच वाजता तारे दिसायला लागले! पंचाचुलीच्या बाजूलाच ब्रह्महृदय आणि रोहिणी प्रकटले! नंतर गुरूसुद्धा आला. दोनच दिवसांपूर्वी पोर्णिमा झालेली असल्यामुळे चंद्रही लवकरच आला. पंचाचुलीच्या मागून होणारा चंद्रोदय! अहा हा! कडक थंडीमध्ये काही वेळ आकाश निरीक्षण केलं. खूप अंधुक तारे दिसत आहेत! मोबाईलच्या फोटोमध्ये देवयानी आकाशगंगा स्पष्ट येते आहे! फोटो सुंदर घेता आले! संध्याकाळीच जेवण केलं. रात्रभराच्या टाईम लॅप्सचं सर्व सेटींग करून ठेवलं. थोडा वेळ आकाश दर्शन केलं आणि रात्री ९ च्या सुमारास निद्रा आराधना सुरू केली. पहाटे उठून पहाटेचं आकाशही बघणार आहे. नक्कीच, ह्या कडक थंडीमध्येही आकाश दर्शन करता येणार! आणि आकाश फार सुंदर दिसणार!
