Experiencing Kumaon Himalaya 8 (Final): Journey towards South begins...

Left from Satgarh on early morning of 11th December. The jeep arrived sharp at 5:30. Had great stay at my relatives in Satgarh. Greet meetings! Himalaya, the villages and the people! Of course, the trekking and sky watching! But now it is time to leave. Feeling extremely home- sick! 

The mountain in darkness in the dawn! But windows are closed due to cold temperature. Within no time, got introduced with the passengers. Here, in villages, every one knows one another! Slowly Sunlight is coming as the jeep reaches Pithauragarh. We picked up one more passenger from his house and left. City traffic is low due to early morning.

First halt on Pithauragarh- Tanakpur road is Gurna Mata Mandir. All vehicles bow down here and then only go further. Then came a huge downhill ghat. The valley is showing sea of fog! Intense scenes! Everywhere there are mountains and the Pahari river Ramganga cutting the mountain ranges! The jeep descended and crossed the river and turned towards right. Briefly it was Champawat district and then Almoda district started. Sun appearing out of the sea of fog! But it is very cold! I took tea during first break. Of course, first warmed hands, then warmed the face and then drank it! 

The road is slowly going towards Himalaya's base and elevation of 1600 m will slowly reduce. Of course, it does not descend directly. It crosses many mountain ranges. Many times the road ascends again. As a result, sometimes Deodar trees are not visible. Even the fur skin of dogs also change! Danya village- some years ago it had just 2-3 houses and shops. Now it is looking like a town. Almoda is coming closer. Almoda is not on the short road from Pithauragarh to Kathgodam. But due to work of the passengers, we are having this diversion. 

Almoda! A mountain city with dense population! After many days, I am experiencing this city buzz. If we had halted here for more time, I could have visited Ramakrishna Kutir Ashram, established after Vivekananda's inspiration. But it was not to be. I took a small walk in Almoda city. We left soon. Slowly, the base of Himalaya is coming! At one point, many vehicles were stopped before a small bridge on a river. The reason is this- many stones and soil is sliding from the mountain! It is a common scene in mountains. We had to stop for a while. We crossed the river and entered Nainital district. 

Kainchi Dham of Neem Karoli Baba! I have not read about him. Recently, after Virat Kohli's visit, many people are going there. We saw it from outside only. And just a few days before writing this blog, I listened one interview of Krishna Das ji, a Westerner disciple of Neem Karoli Baba! The interview was done by Ranveer Alahabadiya. Krishna Das ji has shared wonderful and sincere experiences! One can guess how Neem Karoli Baba must have been!

Further journey took place smoothly. The road bypasses Nainital and goes along Bhimtal. As the base is approaching, a unique scenario will be seen! Till now, there are mountains everywhere- in all directions. But now slowly, in one direction, it will be a huge valley! Three sides it will be mountains and in Southern direction, there will be land in distance! From any part of mountains, we see this unique scenario when we reach the base! The land seen from a distance! And of course, all variations in biodiversity as we leave the elevations behind and reach the near sea- level. Trees change, flowers are different and even the mountains also change! 

The jeep dropped me just near the station. I had my lunch  there. Suddenly children shouted in the school nearby. They were afraid of the monkey group! I also saw monkeys freely roaming in the station! Kathgodam! The station built by the British to carry wood cut from the trees in Himalaya. The train from here will take me directly to Mumbai Central! Really from Himalaya to the metro! Traveling from Uttar Pradesh- Rajasthan- Madhya Pradesh- Gujarat it will reach Mumbai after 31 hours. And I will reach Pune after midnight. But what a journey this has been! Unbelievable! Beautiful treks, sky watching and meetings! Now I am excited about South India cycling expedition! But it was north till Munsyari before I set off for this expedition! Oh!

कुमाऊँमधील रम्य भटकंती भाग ८ (अंतिम): दक्षिणेकडील प्रवासाची सुरूवात... 

✪ होमसिक झाल्याची भावना! 
✪ रामगंगेच्या किनार्‍याने घाट वाटेचा प्रवास
✪ विवेकानंदांचं अलमोडा आणि नीम करोली बाबांचं कैंची धाम!
✪ तीन बाजूंने पर्वत आणि दूरवर सपाट जमीन 
✪  काठगोदाम- लाकडं नेण्यासाठी ब्रिटीशांनी बांधलेलं स्टेशन
✪  दक्षिण भारत सायकल प्रवासाची उत्सुकता

११ डिसेंबरच्या पहाटे सत्गड़वरून निघालो! ठीक साडेपाच वाजता जीप आली. भर अंधारात प्रवास सुरू झाला! सत्गड़ला नातेवाईकांसोबत दिवस छान गेले. छान भेटी झाल्या. हिमालय, तिथली गावं आणि लोक! आणि अर्थातच तिथलं ट्रेकिंग आणि आकाश दर्शन! पण आता निघायची वेळ झाली. निघताना फाssर होमसिक वाटतंय! 

पहाटेचा अंधारातला परिसर! पण कडक थंडीमुळे खिडक्या बंद केल्या आहेत. थोड्या वेळात सोबतच्या प्रवाशांशी ओळख झाली. इथे गावात सगळे एकमेकांना ओळखतात. पिथौरागढ़ येईपर्यंत उजाडायला सुरूवात झाली. आणखी एका जणाच्या घरी जाऊन जीप पुढे निघाली. सकाळची वेळ असल्यामुळे मुख्य शहरात वाहतुक कमी आहे.

पिथौरागढ़- टनकपूर रस्त्यावरचा पहिला थांबा म्हणजे गुरना माता मंदिर! इथे नमस्कार करूनच गाड्या पुढे जातात. पुढे मोठा घाट उतार लागला. दरीमध्ये धुक्याचा समुद्र! विलक्षण नजारे! सगळीकडे पर्वत रांगा आणि मधून वाहणारी पहाड़ी नदी‌ रामगंगा! घाट उतरून नदी ओलांडून जीप उजवीकडे वळाली. थोडा वेळ चंपावत जिल्हा लागला आणि मग अलमोडा जिल्हा सुरू झाला. दरीमध्ये असलेल्या धुक्याच्या समुद्रावरचा सूर्योदय बघता आला! कडक थंडी आहे! नाश्त्यासाठी थांबलो तेव्हा चहा घेतला. अर्थात् आधी हात गरम केले, मग वाफ चेहर्‍यावर घेतली आणि मग चहा! 

१६०० मीटर उंचीच्या पिथौरागढ़वरून हळु हळु रस्ता हिमालयाच्या पायथ्याकडे जातोय. अर्थात् तो एकदम खाली येत नाही. कित्येक डोंगररांगा ओलांडाव्या लागतात. अनेकदा रस्ता परत वर चढतो. त्यानुसार मध्ये मध्ये सूचीपर्णी वृक्ष दिसत नाही आहेत. कुत्र्यांवरच्या केसाळ कातडीतही फरक जाणवतो! काही‌ वर्षांपूर्वी अगदी दोन- तीन घरं- दुकान असलेलं दन्या गाव आता बरंच मोठं झालेलं दिसतंय! अलमोडा जवळ येतंय. अलमोडा तसं पिथौरागढ़- काठगोदाम रस्त्यावर येत नाही. तिथे सहप्रवाशांना काम आहे, त्यामुळे तेही बघणं होतं आहे. 

अलमोडा! अगदी डोंगरावर वसलेलं दाटीवाटीचं शहर. खूप दिवसांनंतर शहराची गर्दी अनुभवली! इथे जास्त वेळ थांबलो असतो तर विवेकानंदांच्या प्रेरणेतून स्थापन झालेला रामकृष्ण कुटिर हा आश्रम बघता आला असता. पण योग नव्हता. थोडा वेळ अलमोडा शहर बघितलं. एक छोटा वॉकही केला. थोड्या वेळात पुढे निघालो. हळु हळु हिमालयाचा पायथा जवळ येतोय! एका ठिकाणी एका नदीवरच्या पुलापाशी वाहनं‌ थांबली होती. डोंगरावरून वाळू आणि लहान- मोठे दगड पडत आहेत! पहाड़ात अनेक ठिकाणी हे दृश्य दिसतं. थोडा वेळ थांबावं लागलं. ती नदी ओलांडली आणि नैनिताल जिल्हा सुरू झाला. 

नीम करोली बाबांचं कैंची धाम! त्यांच्याबद्दल फार वाचलं नाहीय. अलीकडे विराट कोहली तिथे गेल्यापासून एकदमच लोक मोठ्या संख्येने येत आहेत. बाहेरून आश्रमाचा परिसर बघितला. योगायोग म्हणजे हा ब्लॉग लिहीण्याच्या थोडे दिवस आधीच कृष्ण दास ह्या त्यांच्या पाश्चात्य शिष्याची रणवीर अलाहाबादियाने घेतलेली मुलाखत ऐकली. खूप सुंदर अनुभव कृष्ण दास जींने सांगितले आहेत. त्यावरून नीम करोली बाबा कोण आणि कसे होते, हा अंदाज येतो!

पुढचा प्रवास लवकर झाला. हा रस्ता नैनितालच्या थोडा अलीकडून आणि भीमतालच्या जवळून जातो! पायथा जवळ येईल तसं एक सुंदर दृश्यं दिसायला मिळेल. इतका वेळ सगळीकडे पर्वतच पर्वत होते. पण आता हळुच एका बाजूने पर्वताच्या ऐवजी मोठी दरी येईल! पर्वत तीन बाजूंनी असतील आणि एका बाजूने दूरवर जमीन दिसेल! पहाड़ात कुठूनही पायथ्याला येताना हे सुंदर दृश्य दिसतंच! दूरवरून दिसणारी भूमाता! आणि अर्थातच उंचीवरून पायथ्याकडे येताना दिसणारे जैव विविधतले सगळे बदल! झाडं बदलतात, फुलं‌ बदलतात, डोंगराचं स्वरूप बदलतं! 

काठगोदामला पोहचलो! स्टेशनच्या बाहेर जीपने सोडलं. तिथे जेवण केलं आणि स्टेशनात जायला निघालो. बाजूच्या शाळेत एकदम विद्यार्थ्यांचा गलका ऐकू आला. शाळेच्या आवारात माकडं आल्यामुळे विद्यार्थी एकदम दचकले! नंतर स्टेशनवरही माकडं मस्त फिरत आहेत! काठगोदाम! ब्रिटीशांनी हिमालयात तोडलेली लाकडं वाहून नेण्यासाठी बांधलेलं स्टेशन! कदाचित काष्ठ गोदाम असं नाव असावं. इथून ट्रेन थेट मुंबई सेंट्रलला सोडेल! कुठून कुठे! उत्तर प्रदेश- राजस्थान- मध्य प्रदेश- गुजरात असं करत ३१ तासांचा प्रवास आणि रात्री मुंबईतून पहाटे पुण्यात! पण ह्यावेळची भटकंती अप्रतिम झाली! सुंदर ट्रेक, आकाश दर्शन आणि भेटी! आता उत्सुकता आहे ती जानेवारीत होणार्‍या दक्षिण भारत सायकल प्रवासाची! दक्षिणेत जाण्याआधी उत्तरेत अगदी मुन्सियारीपर्यंत फिरायला मिळालं! वा!
