Karve Days 7: Memorable field work in the villages

Days of "Karve Institute of Social service"! The second year field work was very unique. I was placed in one organization working for rural development. It was working in villages of Pune district. From Karvenagar, I would aboard a bus till Akurdi. There its office was located. After discussions there, I would go to Kanhewadi Tarfe Chakan village near Talegaon Dabhade. Sometimes I would need to walk 7 kms from Induri village. In 2007, those villages were peaceful. Industrialization was not that deep. So despite of this ling walk and vehicle problem, it was enjoyable to roam there. The villages still had the village- look. Initially I had gone to Mawal villages and then Bhor and Khed villages.

In the first half of the field work, I was made a member of Nirmal Gram Inspection Committee. The placement organization was working as the inspecting body in many villages. There were some criterion- how is sanitation in entire the village, are there toilets in hamlets and communities, are trenches closed etc. We would discuss with people. I had great to learn. There was so much to enjoy also. The guide from the agency and other colleagues were there. I learned about working of this organization. I prepared its agency profile and also understood its structure. Nagmani Rao madam was there to guide. Those discussions were interesting. She would stress that one should observe and understand village power dynamics, approaches of work. One should understand this from many angles- how this work is built, how much women are involved (are they involved) etc. I came to learn many things with her. Report writing was as interesting as the field work was. Visiting Bhor villages such as Ashimpi, Devghar, Nigudghar etc. in rainy season and staying in Bhor were beautiful memories!

Monday and Tuesday it was the field work. Other days it was the college. I completed my data collection in Latur for my research. I visited many communities in Latur and collected a representative sample. I got the questionnaire filled up with responses. I interviewed the waste pickers. After that, I needed to record all the responses in a table with its codes and then prepare the code- book. Around the same time, I visited Nanded district and went to Kavalgaon- the village of my Karve friend Kailas Yesge. Kailas was one among many students who had started their work even before MSW. Kailas and his friends were working for empowerment and organization of farmers. I saw their good work. 

College lectures continued and so the company of the friends and also the assignments! Everyone was slowly getting more occupied. Compared to the specialization group, the collective group was less together. So we missed the friends from other specializations. Many group assignments were going on. Some friends would make presentations after some study and preparation. Such presentations would teach us important subject. I still remember one presentation on Cerebral Palsy made by Manasi and Sangra. As the year progressed further, the submissions slowly became tight. Examinations were also round the corner. But for this semester, the subjects did not appear to be difficult. While teaching the Social Legislation related topic, Nagmani Rao madam would give interesting examples. For example, legally speaking a tied dog is an immovable property and if it is released, then it is a movable property! 

During my field work, I also studied water conservation, watershed management, Continuous Contour trenches (CCTs) and related works. The first half of the field work was related to study, understanding and preparation for the further tasks. Those tasks included a micro-study and formation of a self- help group etc. Our specialization group also visited one ideal village in Maharashtra- Hiware Bazar developed under the leadership of Popatrao Pawar. Difference in mountains near this village and mountains far from this village was clear. On this visit, Vishal Karuna sir was with us. He was liked by many students and he would speak less. Once he had shared with us his journey from a small village Kasagi on the border of Maharashtra and Karnataka, how he faced suppression in his childhood days and how he toiled hard and achieved things in life.

Examination of the third semester! No subject was threatening. On the eve of one paper I was rather completing my code-book instead of studying. Numbers were given for every response categories The deadline for submitting the thesis was 15th February. Many stages were pending before that. After the tabulation, analysis was to be done. Then the observations and chapter writing. The race against time had started!

Some friends had gone to Chennai for one conference. It was a great experience for them. After Diwali holidays, we were going to Rajasthan for a study tour. Students made all preparations for this along with the faculties. We were to go to Ahmedabad by train and then by bus to Rajasthan. We were going to visit many organizations.

कर्वेतले दिवस ७: गावांमधलं अविस्मरणीय फिल्ड वर्क

"कर्वे समाज सेवा संस्थेतले" दिवस! दुसर्‍या वर्षीचं फिल्ड वर्क खूप वेगळं होतं. ग्राम विकासावर काम करणार्‍या बजाज ग्रूपमधल्या एका संस्थेत मला पाठवलं गेलं. पुणे जिल्ह्यातल्या गावांमध्ये त्यांचं काम होतं. कर्वेनगरवरून बस बदलून आधी आकुर्डीला जायचो. तिथे संस्थेचं कार्यालय होतं. तिथे चर्चा झाल्यानंतर तळेगांव दाभाडेजवळच्या कान्हेवाडी तर्फे चाकण गावात जायचो. कधी कधी इंदुरी गावातून ७ किमी पायी जावं लागायचं. २००७ मध्ये ती गावं बरीच शांत होती. औद्योगिकीकरण इतकं आत गेलेलं नव्हतं. त्यामुळे पायपीट असली व जाताना वाहन मिळत नसलं तरी फिरताना छान वाटायचं. गावांचं गावपण तोपर्यंत शिल्लक होतं. सुरूवातीला मावळ आणि भोर व पुढे खेडमधली गावं बघायला मिळाली.

फिल्ड वर्कमध्ये पहिल्या टप्प्यात निर्मल ग्राम योजनेसाठी संस्थेची पडताळणी समिती सदस्य म्हणून त्या समितीत मला काम दिलं गेलं. अनेक गावांमध्ये संस्था पडताळणीसाठी भेटी द्यायची. निर्मल ग्राम योजनेमध्ये काही निकष असायचे- संपूर्ण गावात स्वच्छता कशी आहे, वस्त्या- वाड्यांवर शौचालय आहे का, नाल्या बंदिस्त आहेत का इ. लोकांसोबत चर्चा असायची. त्यामध्ये शिकायला तर खूप मिळालंच पण मजासुद्धा खूप आली. संस्थेमधले मार्गदर्शक सर व इतर सहकारी ह्यांच्याशी मैत्री झाली. त्यांच्या कामाचे पैलू हळु हळु लक्षात आले. संस्थेची प्रोफाईल बनवता आली आणि संरचना समजून घेता आली. मार्गदर्शनाला नागमणी  मॅडम होत्याच. त्यामुळे चर्चा छान व्हायच्या. त्यांचा भर होता की, कामाबरोबर गावांमधलं निरीक्षण, वेगवेगळे पॉवर डायनॅमिक्स, वेगवेगळे अप्रोचेस हेसुद्धा बघायला पाहिजेत. एखादं काम कसं उभं राहतं, महिला त्यात किती सहभागी असतात, असतात तरी का, अशा अनेक बाजूंनी ते समजून घेतलं पाहिजे. नागमणी मॅडम फिल्ड वर्क मार्गदर्शक असल्यामुळे ह्या गोष्टी छान शिकायला मिळाल्या. रिपोर्ट लिहीण्यातही फिल्ड वर्क इतकीच मजा येत होती. पावसाळ्याच्या दिवसात भोरजवळच्या आशिंपी, देवघर, निगूडसर अशा गावांमधल्या भेटी आणि भोरमधले मुक्काम विशेष लक्षात राहिले!

सोमवार- मंगळवार दोन दिवस फिल्ड वर्क असायचं. बाकी दिवस कॉलेज असायचं. रिसर्चचं लातूरमधलं माहिती संकलन (डेटा कलेक्शन) पूर्ण झालं. लातूरच्या सगळ्या प्रकारच्या प्रातिनिधिक वस्त्या घेऊन प्रश्नावल्या भरून घेतल्या. कचरा वेचकांच्या मुलाखती घेतल्या. इथून पुढे त्याचं टेब्युलेशन एका कोष्टकामध्ये सगळे प्रतिसाद आकड्यांमध्ये नोंदवणे आणि मग कोडबूक बनवणे अशा गोष्टी सुरू झाल्या. त्याच सुमारास माझा कर्वेचा मित्र कैलास यसगेचं त्याच्या मूळ गावातलं काम बघायला नांदेडच्या कावळगांवला जाऊन आलो. कर्वेतले असे अनेक विद्यार्थी होते ज्यांचं आधीपासूनच काम सुरू झालेलं होतं. कैलास व त्याचे मित्र शेतकर्‍यांचं संघटन व सक्षमीकरण करत होते. मित्रांनी मिळून चांगलं काम उभं केलेलं दिसलं. 

कॉलेजमधले तास, मित्रांची सोबत आणि इतर असाईनमेंटसही सुरू राहिल्या. सगळेच मित्र- मैत्रिणी हळु हळु व्यस्त होत चालले होते. स्पेशलायजेशनच्या तुलनेत सगळ्या वर्गाचा एकत्रित वेळ कमी झाला होता. त्यामुळे इतर वेळेत त्या मित्र- मैत्रिणींची उणीव जाणवायची. वेगवेगळ्या ग्रूप असाईनमेंटससुद्धा सुरू होत्या. इतर मित्र- मैत्रिणींनी अभ्यासानंतर केलेल्या सादरीकरणातूनही शिकायला मिळायचं. मानसी व संग्रामने केलेलं असं एक सेरेब्रल पाल्सीवरचं प्रेझेंटेशन अजून आठवतं. वर्ष पुढे गेलं‌ तसा सबमिशनचा ताण हळु हळु वाढत होता. परीक्षासुद्धा जवळ आली. पण ह्या सेमीस्टरला विषय कठिण असे वाटले नाहीत. सामाजिक विधी- सोशल लेजिस्लेशन पेपरमध्ये नागमणी मॅडम शिकवताना छान उदाहरणं द्यायच्या. कायद्याच्या दृष्टीने बांधलेला कुत्रा स्थावर मालमत्ता (immovable property) आहे तर तोच कुत्रा सोडला तर जंगम मालमत्ता (movable property) होतो! 

फिल्ड वर्कमध्ये गावांमध्ये झालेलं जल संवर्धन, पाणलोट व्यवस्थापन, संलग्न समतल चर (CCTs), कोल्हापूर बंधारे अशी कामं बघायला मिळाली. फिल्ड वर्कच्या पूर्वार्धामध्ये अभ्यास, आकलन, पूर्व तयारी अशा गोष्टी होत्या व उत्तरार्धात एका विषयावर मायक्रो स्टडी‌ व बचत गट स्थापन करण्यासारखी कामं होती. आमच्या स्पेशलायजेशनचा एक दिवसीय दौरा पोपटराव पवारांचं आदर्श गांव असलेल्या हिवरे बाजारलाही जाऊन आला होता. हिरवे बाजारच्या जवळचे डोंगर व दूरचे डोंगर ह्यातला फरक लगेचच जाणवत होता. ह्यावेळी विद्यार्थ्यांचे लाडके व कमी बोलणारे विशाल करूणा सर सोबत होते. महाराष्ट्र- कर्नाटक सीमेवरच्या कसगी गावातून ते कसे पुढे आले, अन्याय सहन करत आणि कष्ट घेत ते कसे शिकले हे त्यांनी एकदा सांगितलं होतं.

तिसर्‍या सेमिस्टरची परीक्षा! अवघड विषय कोणता वाटत नव्हता. एका पेपरच्या आदल्या दिवशी अभ्यासाची काही काळजी वाटत नसल्यामुळे मी मस्त कोडबूक पूर्ण करत होतो. प्रश्नावलीतल्या प्रत्येक प्रतिसाद प्रकारांना संकेत अंक दिले होते व त्यांचं कोष्टक बनवणं सुरू झालं होतं. प्रबंध सादर करण्याची डेडलाईन १५ फेब्रुवारी होती. त्याआधी बरेच टप्पे बाकी होते. कोष्टकं बनवून विश्लेषण करायचं होतं. त्यातली निरीक्षणं मांडायची होती. प्रकरणं लिहायची होती. वेळेची शर्यत सुरू झाली होती!

काही मित्र- मैत्रिणी चेन्नैला एका कॉन्फरन्ससाठी जाऊन आले. तो अनुभवसुद्धा अगदी वेगळा होता. दिवाळीच्या सुट्ट्यांनंतर राजस्थान स्टडी‌ टूअर होता. त्याची सगळी तयारी विद्यार्थ्यांनी आणि फॅकल्टीने मिळून केली. पुणे- अहमदाबाद ट्रेनने आणि तिथून पुढे बसने असा प्रवास होता. खूप वेगवेगळ्या संस्थांना भेट द्यायला मिळणार होती.
