Experiment 48. Bond between books

This experiment is told to me by my daughter Advika. Take two books. Bring them closer and mix their pages. Arrange them in such a way that around 10- 12 pages will be overlapping with each other. One page of this book, and one page of that book below. This way. Now try to separate the books! It will not be easy! The force of friction is there when pages are mingled. With many such pairs, the force of friction increases and so it requires much force to separate the books.

Activity 48. How to share the work?

Think about this situation. Suppose, you and your 8 friends are in a library. The library is full of books! Such a wonderful site! Apart from reading, you have one task there. All books from one room are to be shifted to another room that is 20 feet away. Around 25 bags of books are to be shifted. Each bag weighs around 5 kilos. Now, think, what will be the best option to do this work? How can you share this work in the optimum way so that you save time and do more reading?


प्रयोग 48. पुस्तकांची घट्ट मैत्री

हा प्रयोग मला माझी मुलगी अद्विकाने सांगितला. दोन पुस्तकं घ्या. त्यांना जवळ आणून त्यांची पानं एकमेकांमध्ये गुंफा. पानं अशी ठेवा की, एका पुस्तकाच्या खाली‌ दुस-या पुस्तकाचं पान. अशी 10- 12 पानं एकमेकांमध्ये गुंफा. आता पुस्तकांना एकमेकांपासून वेगळं करायचा प्रयत्न करा! ते लगेच जमणार नाही! पुस्तकांची घट्ट मैत्री झाली आहे. पानं एकमेकांमध्ये गुंफल्यामुळे तिथे घर्षणाचं‌ बल काम कातं. अनेक पानं अशी गुंफली गेल्यामुळे घर्षणाचं बल वाढतं व त्यामुळे पुस्तकं विलग करायला जास्त शक्ती लागते.

गंमत 48. काम कसं सोपं करता येईल?

असं समजा की, तुम्ही‌ व तुमचे 8 मित्र एका ग्रंथालयात आहात. पुस्तकांनी भरलेलं ग्रंथालय! किती गंमत ना! वाचनाबरोबरच इथे तुम्हांला एक काम करायचं आहे. एका खोलीतली सगळी पुस्तकं 20 फूट लांब असलेल्या दुस-या खोलीत हलवायची आहेत. प्रत्येक पिशवीचं वजन सुमारे 5 किलो आहे. आता विचार करा, की हे काम करण्याचा सगळ्यांत चांगला मार्ग कोणता असेल? सगळ्यांत सोपं हे काम कसं होईल ज्यामुळे तुमचा वेळ वाचेल व तुम्ही पुस्तकं परत वाचू‌ शकाल?

Hello. Some days ago, I came across an interview of Shantanu Naidu, General Manager, Tata Motors. In Lokmat Literature Awards programme, he was awarded for his reading initiatives and for “Mumbai bookies”. Shantanu Naidu! Young friend of honourable Ratan Tata! But little did I know that this Shantanu was this great. He studied in Pune. His mother cultivated habit of reading for him. She also cultivated habit of loving animals. And later on due to his love for dogs, he came in contact with Ratan Tata.

In this interview, his first statement was, “Don’t ask me anything about Ratan Tata!” He went on to say that it is actually not good that an award is needed to be given for reading! Through the course of this interview, he fluently expressed himself in Marathi. True great persons are always humble and down to earth! It was a great joy to listen to him.
