Experiencing Kumaon Himalaya 2: Trekking in Pithauragarh

The morning of 3rd December! Yesterday I had to spend the night in the open at the bus stop. The bus had left at around 3 am. The ghat- journey at the dawn! The night was so long, I was wondering when will it last! But surprisingly the night was quickly over like a timelapse! When the bus stopped at Champawat for tea, it was twilight. Mountain ranges everywhere! Spiral roads! Sparse houses in the mountains and farming on the slopes! This road comes under Hirak project of "BRO". Then Lohaghat, Gurna and Pithauragarh! The road was not closed anywhere and there was not much traffic also. Reached Pithauragarh at 8:30 am.

Relatives coming for the marriage are supposed to stay at one hotel. But this Pithauragarh! A city at around 1600 meter elevation. Snow- capped mountains are visible in the distance! I started my walk with the gentle sunshine. Asked directions to some boys and they showed me the short cut path- the walkway! Pahari people are very genuine. Had a wonderful small walk with them. Then met relatives from the side of my wife. It was a good meeting and dialogue. Later on I took ample rest. 

As it is December, the Sun sets here quite early! It is dark after 5:30 pm. The afternoon is not that cold, but the evening is very cold. I observed the night sky from the hotel terrace. There are plenty of city lights and also the Moon is almost full. So for clear sky, I need to wait a bit.

After proper sleep in the night, I left for Chandak hill on the morning of 4th December. The marriage rituals are scheduled in the noon, so I have time till 10 am. Chandak hill is located around 7.5 kms from the hotel. I know the main roads and so started easily. I had tea with biscuits in one hotel. Slowly the city passed by- the houses, shops, Government offices were passed and the mountain began! Even the snow- capped peaks were visible! Aha! This area clearly shows vastness of Himalaya! Except for some morning walkers, the ghat road is so silent! Small hamlets in the mountains and in the valley! I had a wonderful trek. After reaching the top of the hill, many snow- capped mountains showed up! Also ghat roads in distant mountains and villages are visible! In the hill, there is a walk- way right in the Deodar trees! Aha ha! Unbelievable experience! I thoroughly enjoyed walking here. It is so cold that even after completing 15 kms, I did not have any sweat and no thirst also! Only I had to remove my sweater. Again took the tea break and reached the hotel. I had seen “Satellite” bus stand in Bareilly, here I saw “Ulka Mata Mandir” (Meteorite temple)” and “Antriksha Bungalow” (Space bungalow)!

The marriage rituals started in the noon. I was expecting that there would not be DJ trouble at least here in Himalaya. But alas, it was not to be. Of course, it was not that horrible like one experiences in places like Delhi. Traditional music band people are dressed nicely! Traditional instruments and Pahari music! When the procession from the party of the groom reached the bride’s marriage hall, we had our lunch. The style of the local music and dressing of the band party resembled a bit to Tibetan Buddhist style. As long as it was Sunshine of the afternoon, it was not cold. The marriage ceremony will go further till night. So some of us left Pithauragarh for Satgarh- a small dream-like village. 

Satgarh! Just 20 kms from Pithauragarh but nestling right in the Himalaya! A beautiful Pahari village! Last time the night sky here was unbelievable! Night has fallen in the villages in the valley. The light is fading rapidly. We reached Satgarh in the night. Now this village has a jeepable road. But we are fortunate that our vehicle dropped us at the beginning of the trek path! It is a short but steep trek on the village walk- way. Walking on this incline helps to fight the cold conditions! But no! Almost immediately after we completed the walk, it was again very cold. Sky watching not going to be easy here! It is severe cold! The sky has clouds. Some faint stars are visible. But due to bright full- Moon, not much is visible. There is the temple light from Dhwaj Mandir! Himalaya! Wow!

कुमाऊँमधील रम्य भटकंती भाग २: पिथौरागढ़ भ्रमंती

३ डिसेंबरची‌ सकाळ! कालची रात्र उघड्या बस स्टॉपवर थंडीत काढल्यानंतरचा पहाटेचा अंधारातला घाटाचा प्रवास! ही रात्र संपणारच नाहीय असं वाटत होतं. पण चक्क रात्र लवकर गेली. डुलकी लागली आणि तास गेलेले कळालं नाही. टाईम लॅप्स फोटोग्राफीमध्ये जसे काही तासांचे काही सेकंद होतात, तशीच रात्र भरभर गेल्यासारखी वाटली! टनकपूरवरून तीनला निघालेली बस साडेपाचला चंपावतला चहासाठी थांबली तेव्हा पहाट झाल्याचं दिसलं! सर्वदूर उंच पर्वत! वळणा वळणांचा रस्ता! डोंगरात थोडी थोडी घरं आणि उतारावरची‌ शेती! "बीआरओ" च्या हिरक परियोजनेच्या अंतर्गत हा रस्ता येतो. नंतर लोहाघाट, गुरना मार्गे पिथौरागढ़! रस्ता कुठे बंद नाहीय आणि ट्रॅफिक जामही नाहीय. त्यामुळे तसं लवकरच म्हणजे साडेआठला पिथौरागढ़ला पोहचलो.

लग्नाकरता येणा-या नातेवाईकांसाठीच्या हॉटेलमध्ये जायचं आहे. पिथौरागढ़! साधारण १६०० मीटर उंचीवर वसलेलं शहर. दूरवर हिमशिखरं दिसत आहेत! कोवळ्या ऊन्हाचा आनंद घेत रस्ता विचारत निघालो. काही मुलं सोबतीला आली. त्यांनी शॉर्ट कट असलेल्या पायवाटा (पगडंडी) दाखवल्या. पहाड़ी लोक खरंच खूप वेगळे आहेत. त्यांच्यासोबत छोटा पण मस्त वॉक झाला. नंतर बायकोच्या बाजूचे नातेवाईक भेटले. गप्पा- गोष्टी झाल्या. लग्नासाठी आलेल्यांच्या भेटी झाल्या. नंतर भरपूर आरामही झाला. 

डिसेंबर महिना असल्यामुळे इथे सूर्यास्त लवकर होतो. साडेपाचनंतर लगेच अंधार होतो! आणि दुपारी कमी असलेली थंडी लगेच फणा काढते! पिथौरागढ़च्या हॉटेलच्या गच्चीतून आकाश बघितलं. शहराचे दिवे बरेच आहेत आणि चंद्रही पोर्णिमेजवळ आहे. त्यामुळे चांगल्या स्वच्छ आकाशासाठी अजून वाट बघावी लागेल. 

रात्री चांगला आराम झाल्यावर दुस-या दिवशी ४ डिसेंबरला चंडाक हिलकडे जायला निघालो. लग्नाचे विधी दुपारनंतर आहेत. त्यामुळे सकाळी १० पर्यंत मोकळा वेळ आहे. हॉटेलपासून चंडाक हिल साधारण साडेसात किलोमीटर येतं. गावातला मुख्य रस्ता माहिती आहे. त्यामुळे सहजपणे निघालो. एका हॉटेलात चहा- बिस्कीट घेतले आणि पुढे निघालो. हळु हळु घरं, दुकानं, सरकारी कार्यालयं मागे पडली आणि डोंगर सुरू झाला. दूरवरचे नजारेही सुरू झाले! अहा हा! हिमालयाच्या भव्यतेचा अनुभव देणारा हा परिसर! सकाळचे फिरायला आलेले तुरळक लोक सोडले तर निर्जन असा घाटाचा रस्ता! बाजूला डोंगरात व खाली छोटी गावं! सुंदर भ्रमंती‌ झाली. पूर्ण डोंगर चढल्यावर दूरवर अनेक हिमशिखरं नजरेच्या कक्षेत आली! त्याशिवाय दूरवरच्या डोंगरातले नागमोडी रस्ते आणि गावंही दिसत आहेत. एका ठिकाणी देवदार झाडांमध्ये जाणारी सुंदर पायवाट आहे! अहा हा! अवर्णनीय अनुभव! मनसोक्त फिरलो. थंडी इतकी कडक की, पूर्ण १५ किलोमीटर झाले तरी एक थेंबही घाम आला नाही आणि अजिबात तहानही लागली नाही! फक्त स्वेटर काढता आलं इतकंच. परतीच्या मार्गावर परत चहाचा ब्रेक घेतला आणि हॉटेलवर पोहचलो. बरेलीमधल्या "सॅटेलाईट" बसस्टँडनंतर इथे "उल्का माता मंदिर" आणि "अंतरिक्ष बंगलासुद्धा" बघायला मिळाला! 

दुपारनंतर हळु हळु लग्नाचे विधी सुरू झाले. हिमालयात तरी डीजेचा त्रास नसावा अशी अपेक्षा होती. पण ती पूर्ण झाली नाही. अर्थात् दिल्लीसारख्या ठिकाणी होतो तितका त्रास नव्हता. लग्नामध्ये बँड वाजवणारे लोक मस्त सजून आले आहेत. पारंपारिक वाद्य आणि पहाड़ी संगीत! वरात मुलीकडच्या मंगल कार्यालयात गेल्यानंतरच दुपारचं जेवण झालं. इथल्या संगीताची शैली आणि वरातीतल्या लोकांचा पोशाख काहीसा तिबेटी बौद्ध पद्धतीचा वाटला. ऊन असेपर्यंत थंडी वाट बघत थांबलीय! लग्नाचे उरलेले विधी नंतर आहेत आणि ते खूप वेळ चालू राहतील. त्यामुळे आम्ही काही जण संध्याकाळी पिथौरागढ़वरून सत्गढ़ ह्या गावाला जायला निघालो. 

सत्गढ़! पिथौरागढ़पासून २० किलोमीटर अंतरावर पण अगदी डोंगरात वसलेलं‌ हिमालयातलं पहाड़ी गांव! मागच्या वेळी इथलं आकाश अ वि श्व स नी य होतं! दरीमध्ये असलेली गावं अंधारात बुडाली आहेत! हळु हळु संधीप्रकाश जातोय. अंधारातच सत्गढ़ला पोहचलो! इथे जाताना आता कच्चा रस्ता झालाय. पण सुदैवाने आम्ही अशा जागी उतरलो जिथून मस्त पायवाटेने जावं लागेल. तीव्र चढाची पण छोटी सात मिनिटांची पायवाट! एक सुंदर ट्रेक. चला, निदान पायी चालताना तरी थंडीपासून सुटका मिळतेय! पण कसलं काय! जेमतेम चालत असेपर्यंत आणि पाच एक मिनिट गरम वाटलं. नंतर लगेच थंडीचा कडाका सुरू! आकाश दर्शन करणं खरंच सोपं नाहीय! थंडी भयाण होतेय! आकाशात थोडे ढग आहेत! कुठे कुठे अंधुक तारे दिसत आहेत. पण चंद्राचं तेज आकाशात पसरलंय! समोर डोंगरात ध्वज मंदिरातला दिवा चमकतोय! हिमालय! वा!
