Namaste. Dawn of 25th January. I woke up at 5 am. Kathirgamaji also has woken up. He did his worship for some time. Then he told me, let us have a walk. Initially he took me to Mandapam port! Whoa! Small parked boats! He told that there is an alert of storm, therefore these boats are parked here. Otherwise in the night also they would be in deep sea. The dockyard! Glowing water of the sea- waves! Greatly thrilling experience! Also little frightening! He showed me a line of lights in the distance- See, it is the Pamban bridgse! Oh!
Then he took me to one hotel for tea. We crossed the railway line. En route, many of his friends met. He introduced me to those people. Even to the tea shopper, he told me that he has come on cycle from this route. When we were returning, one of his old and slightly weak friend came. His health and overall situation appeared to be shaky. Kathirgamaji introduced me to him also. Interestingly, he started speaking with me in Hindi! He had worked with coast guard near Mumbai for some years! His name was Nagrajji. After knowing nature and objective of my travel, he gave me Rs. 100. I politely rejected many times, but he forced me to take it! Such great people! Gratitude and only gratitude.
It is daylight when we reached home. Today I don't need to carry any luggage. Only water bottle and cycle repairing kit I kept and left! For some time, "he" is not visible. Slowly, the land started to shrink and then the sea arrived! Firstly on two sides of the road and then in the front also! Unbelievable bridge of Pamban! Oh! Some cyclists have given this bridge the name- God of head winds! And it is very apt. Enormous winds are there! This bridge is not constructed on any creek or strait! It is constructed on open sea! Just amazing! Fantastic and incredible! A man- made miracle. And sheer vastness below it! Small boats and large vessels! The road- bridge and also the railway- bridge! That bridge is so low and so close to the sea! The winds are pushing my cycle. I stopped briefly and took some snaps! Amazing! Width of this road is less and winds are so high. So I could not stop for more time. Crossed the bridge with these great views and the island started!
Rameswaram! Due to a famous pilgrimage site, people from all over the country come here. There is a traffic jam also! I got stuck for some time. But as I am having the cycle, I found a way. I crossed the temple corner. Before crossing the city, I had my breakfast in one hotel. Here there are many persons speaking Marathi! One also talked to me. Due to crowds, I had to wait for some time. I had my Masala Dosa and left. Now Dhanushkodi is coming! After that Arichal Munai. The point where the road ends, the narrow strip of land ends and also Indian land ends!
The wind is in favourable direction. I am getting good speed. After Rameswaram, road is vacant again. But considering number of vehicles, traffic jam is sure. Slowly, the island is shrinking! “He” is coming closer. Slowly he arrived on both the sides of the road! I am seeing one tower in Dhanushkodi in the distance. Dhanushkodi is called Ghost town of India! In the past, it was connected through the railway. Then it was a proper village. But in the dangerous storm that struck it on 22nd December 1964, the railway track was thrown away. The storm created havoc and then the settlement was displaced. Now, no one stays here after 6 pm. When we had come in 2009, we had seen last fragments of the railway station. I think now they are also removed. There are many shops on the road.
Dhanushkodi! Till now, the wind is not threatening. I can gently cycle. The sea is also some distance away. The road has beach on both sides. But I did not feel like going to this beach. Four kilometers ahead of Dhanushkodi- Arichal Munai- the tip of India! One Ashoka Stambha monument is here! Here the road takes u- turn! Here also there are no threatening winds. Here the sea is on three sides of the road. But there is some land between the road and the sea. Thousands of people are ere! Traffic jam! People are climbing on that Ashoka Stambha monument and taking photos! Oh. So sad. I stayed there for some time, watched the area thoroughly. I took some photos and turned my cycle!
Strong headwinds on the return! Opposite winds! Speed immediately reduced. Firstly my task is to cross the traffic jam. Then slowly I passed the crowded region. Again it is silent road and the sea! I am just saving this in my mental memory! How the nature has constructed this place! Such a feeble land strip in the sea- just 30 m by 30 m! The small road- Rocks, sand on both sides and then immediately sea waves! It is said that in the night, Sri Lankan lamps are seen in the night and also Sri Lankan mobile network is captured! If you check this region in Google satellite and street view, you will understand how it is away from the mainland and how deep in the sea! Rameswaram island connected with the Pamban bridge.
Slowly the land strip is widening. Spectacular view of the sea. Before Rameswaram, there is Kothanda Ramar temple on right side! It is also almost in the sea, connected by just a narrow road! I turned my cycle there. It is actually more thrilling than Arichal Munai! Here, the sea is not that open. But water waves are there just below the road! There are some barriers on the road. But they are not continuous and there are gaps. These gaps are made purposefully to allow space to winds! If there had been continuous barriers, then the winds would not crushed them. Therefore it has a passage for the winds! When the cycle comes near such gap, it gets pushed! The small road and vehicles coming from behind! Very thrilling! It was around one km long. I reached the temple. In the distance, I can see Rameswaram skyline! The temple is beautiful from outside. When I went inside, there was a huge queue! So I did not stay there for long. Again enjoyed the thrilling portion of the small road surrounded by creeping sea! If it is so windy now, then what it would be in the Monsoon! And what if I had come here in the Monsoon season, as per my original plan!!??
I had got contact numbers of persons in Art of Living and Vivekananda Kendra in Rameswaram. But I could not meet them somehow. Went to Rameswaram temple! So rush! Congestion and one- way roads! I parked my cycle and walked to the temple. Such a mesmerizing place! So articulate monument! Who were the people who constructed it! How they did it! There was huge queue inside, so I did not go further. I experienced it for some moments. Tried to understand it and then returned back.
One more attraction of Rameswaram is Dr. Abdul Kalam memorial! It is on the road towards Pamban. I visited there. I had to keep my mobile in a locker outside, so could not take photos. Dr. Abdul Kalam's childhood, his journey, his research, contribution related to rockets and missiles is well presented there. There is a good photo collection throwing light on his work and contribution. There are miniature rockets and missiles too. Such a great scientist and teacher- but his humanly nature is also decoded properly. His photos with great people are there. His journey from being a common man is also highlighted. The viewer does get confidence that he or she too can become one like him. It is a must visit place for children.
I got my mobile from the locker. I also had peanut candy and juice and left. Slowly Rameswaram island is passed. The area is so vast that one does not feel that one is on the island! But we realize it when we start seeing the Pamban bridge again! Such a marvel of engineering! While returning from Rameswaram, I could enjoy the other side view. Such vastness and greatness- so many boats and vessels! Innumerable waves! And the rampant winds! On top of that- the traffic jam! I had to stop for some time. I could take some photos and enjoy the thrill. Slowly, the bridge was passed! Mandapam village it is.
Ride of the 14th day is complete. Today 86 kms completed. Nature supported excellently. As the road was so close to the sea or rather on the sea, there were so few climbs. Of course, the wind was enormous on the return journey! In the afternoon, I rested for some time. I played with baby Arav. I was thinking that I would stay here for the second day, I had to shift to another place in the evening. As some guests were coming at Kathirgamaji's house, he made my stay arrangement at one of his friend's house. He himself accompanied me there and cycled also! Before going, I gave them a Yoga book published by Niramaya organization. For going there, I had to load most of the luggage on cycle again. His friend's house is located on the other side of Mandapam station. Kathirgamaji also took me for dinner. Here in some hotels, chapati and vegetable is available. It is called Kurma. I had good dinner. He dropped me to the my stay- place. The room is in the terrace! Sounds of trains passing nearby and stars popping out of clouds! What a day it has been! I am meeting great people like Nagrajji!

नमस्कार. २५ जानेवारीची पहाट! पहाटे ५ ला उठलो. कथिरगमाजीसुद्धा उठले आहेत. त्यांनी थोडा वेळ पूजा केली आणि मग मला चल फिरून येऊ म्हणाले. सुरूवातीला ते मला चालत चालत मंडपमच्या बंदरावर घेऊन गेले! अहा हा! छोट्या छोट्या नांगरून ठेवलेल्या होड्या. ते म्हणाले की, वादळाचा अलर्ट आहे, त्यामुळे ह्या होड्या इथे दिसत आहेत. नाही तर रात्रीही समुद्रात गेलेल्या असतात! समुद्रावरचा धक्का! अंधारात हळुच चमकणारं लाटांचं पाणी! विलक्षण रोमांच आणि थोडी भितीही! तिथून त्यांनी दूरवर प्रकाशझोताची एक रेषा दाखवली- तो पाहा पंबनचा ब्रिज! व्वा!
नंतर ते मला चहासाठी एका हॉटेलात घेऊन गेले. रेल्वे रूळ ओलांडून पलीकडे गेलो. वाटेत अनेक जण त्यांच्या ओळखीची भेटली! चहावाल्यालाही कौतुकाने ते माझ्याबद्दल सांगत आहेत की, असा असा सायकलवर आलाय. तिथून परत येताना एक वृद्ध आणि काहीसे वाकलेले त्यांचे मित्र भेटले. त्यांची तब्येत आणि परिस्थिती नाजुकच वाटत होती. थोडे खुरडत चालत ते दुकानात काही सामान आणायला आले होते. कथिरगमाजींनी माझी त्यांच्याशीही ओळख करून दिली! गंमत म्हणजे ते माझ्याशी हिंदीत बोलले! ते मुंबईमध्ये कोस्ट गार्डसोबत काही वर्षं काम केलेले नागराजजी होते. माझ्या प्रवासाचा हेतु व स्वरूप कळाल्यावर त्यांनी माझ्या हातावर १०० रू. ठेवले. कितीही म्हणालो नको तरी घ्यायलाच लावले! असे विलक्षण लोक! कृतज्ञता आणि कृतज्ञता!
घरी आलो. येईपर्यंत चांगलं उजाडलं आहे. आज सामान सोबत न्यायचं नाहीय! फक्त पाण्याची बाटली आणि सायकलचं किट सोबत ठेवलं आणि निघालो! सुरूवातीला समुद्र दिसत नाहीय. थोड्या वेळाने जमीन अगदी निमुळती होताना दिसली आणि मग समोर तो आलाच! आधी दोन्ही बाजूंना आणि मग पुढेही! पंबनचा अविश्वसनीय सेतू! अहा हा! सायकलिस्टसनी ह्या ब्रिजवरच्या वार्यांना God of head winds असं नाव दिलंय! आणि खरंच! प्रचंड वारं आहे तिथे. कारण हा ब्रिज खाडीवरचा नाही तर खुल्या समुद्रावरचा आहे! निव्वळ अफाट! मानव निर्मित आश्चर्य! प्रचंड भव्य असा पसरलेला तो! आजूबाजूला होड्या आणि नौका! रस्त्याचा ब्रिज आणि बाजूला रेल्वेचा ब्रिज! तो तर अजून खाली आहे! आणि वारा सायकलला ढकलतोय! थोडं थोडं थांबत काही फोटो काढले! विलक्षण! ब्रिजवर रस्त्याची रुंदी तशी कमी आहे आणि वाराही खूप आहे! त्यामुळे जास्त थांबलो नाही. विलक्षण दृश्य बघत पंबनचा सेतू पार झाला आणि बेट सुरू झालं!
रामेश्वरम! ज्योतिर्लिंग असल्यामुळे इथे देशभरातले लोक येतात. महाराष्ट्रातल्याही अनेक मोटरसायकली व बसेस दिसल्या. रामेश्वरममध्ये ट्रॅफिक जामही लागला. काही वेळ त्यात अडकलो. पण सायकल असल्यामुळे लवकर सुटलो. नंतर मंदिराचा कॉर्नर ओलांडून पुढे गेलो. रामेश्वरम शहर संपत आल्यावर एका हॉटेलमध्ये नाश्त्यासाठी थांबलो. अनेक मराठी बोलणारे जण आहेत! एकाने माझी विचारपूससुद्धा केली. इथे गर्दी असल्यामुळे खूप थांबावं लागलं. मसाला डोसा खाऊन पुढे निघालो! आता ओढ आहे धनुषकोडीची आणि त्या आरिकल मुनाईची! जिथे रस्ता संपतो, जमिनीची पट्टी संपते आणि भारताचा प्रदेशही संपतो!
वारे सुदैवाने माझ्या दिशेने आहेत. त्यामुळे चांगला वेग मिळतोय. रामेश्वरमनंतर गर्दी कमी झाली. पण वाहनं खूप येत आहेत. त्यामुळे नंतर तर ट्रॅफिक जाम होणार आहे. हळु हळु बेट आक्रसत जातंय! आधी लांबवर दिसणारा तो आता जवळ येतोय! आणि हळु हळु रस्त्याच्या दोन्ही बाजूंना बीच आले. दूरवर धनुषकोडीतलं टॉवर दिसतंय. धनुषकोडीला Ghost town of India म्हणतात! पूर्वी इथपर्यंत रेल्वे यायची. तेव्हा इथे नियमित वस्ती होती. पण २२ डिसेंबर १९६४ च्या भयानक वादळामध्ये रेल्वे ट्रॅक फेकला गेला. मोठी उलथापालथ झाली. तेव्हापासून इथली वस्ती एकदम कमी झाली. इथे संध्याकाळी ६ नंतर कोणी थांबत नाही. आम्ही २००९ मध्ये आलो होतो तेव्हा धनुषकोडी स्टेशनचे अवशेष दिसत होते. पण आता तेही बहुतेक नाही आहेत. दुकानं खूप वाढली आहेत.
धनुषकोडी! इथपर्यंत तर वारे भितीदायक नाही आहेत. आरामात जाता येतंय! आणि समुद्रही किंचित दूरवर आहे. इथे दोन्ही बाजूंना बीच आहेत. पण थांबावसं वाटलं नाही. धनुषकोडीच्या चार किलोमीटर पुढे भारताचं टोक- आरिकल मुनाई! इथे एक अशोकस्तंभ उभा केलेला आहे! तिथून रस्ता युटर्न घेतो! इथेही काही वारे नाहीत. आणि दोन्ही बाजूंना समुद्र आहे, पण मध्ये थोडी जागा आहे. ही भीषण गर्दी! इथेही ट्रॅफिक जाम! लोक त्या अशोकस्तंभावर चढून फोटो घेत आहेत! अरे रे! थोडा वेळ हा आसमंत बघितला! काही फोटो घेतले! आणि परत फिरलो!
परतीच्या वाटेवर मात्र लगेच वारं अंगावर आलं. हेड विंड किंवा उलटा वारा! त्यामुळे वेग कमी झाला. ट्रॅफिक जाममधून आधी बाहेर पडलो! हळु हळु गर्दी मागे पडली! शांत रस्ता आणि समुद्राची सोबत सुरू झाली! मनामध्ये हे दृश्य साठवून ठेवतोय! निसर्गाने कसा हा भाग निर्माण केला असेल! समुद्राच्या मधोमध अगदी छोटी म्हणजे फार तर ३० मीटर बाय ३० मीटर इतकी जमिनीची पट्टी. त्यातच हा छोटा रस्ता! बाजूला खडक, वाळू आणि लगेच लाटा! धनुषकोडीवरून रात्री श्रीलंकेचे दिवे दिसतात म्हणतात. आणि मोबाईल नेटवर्कही श्रीलंकेचं येतं! हा परिसर गूगल सॅटेलाईट आणि स्ट्रीट व्ह्यू मध्ये बघितला तर कळेल की, मुख्य भूमीपासून किती वेगळा व समुद्राच्या आत आहे! पंबनच्या सेतूने जोडलेलं रामेश्वरम बेट!
हळु हळु जमिनीची पट्टी पसरत जातेय. समुद्राचे वेगवेगळे दृश्य दिसत आहेत! रामेश्वरमच्या आधी उजव्या बाजूला कोदंड रामार मंदिर आहे! तेसुद्धा जवळ जवळ समुद्रात आहे! एक बारीक रस्ता फक्त त्याला जोडतो! तिकडे सायकल वळवली! आणि आरिकल मुनाईपेक्षा जास्त थरार इथे वाटला! इथे समुद्र तितका खुला नाहीय. पण रस्त्याच्या थेट खाली समुद्र आहे! आणि रस्त्यावर कठडे आहेत. पण कुठे कुठे गॅप आहे. आणि ती गॅप वार्यामुळेच आहे. जर सलग कठडे असते तर वार्याने ते टिकले नसते. म्हणून वार्यासाठीही रस्ता सोडला आहे. सायकल जेव्हा अशा गॅपमध्ये येते, तेव्हा लगेच ढकलली जातेय! छोटा रस्ता आणि मागून येणारी वाहनं! खूपच रोमांचक वाटला हा रस्ता. अगदी एक किलोमीटरच असेल. मंदिराजवळ पोहचलो. दूरवर रामेश्वरमची स्कायलाईन दिसतेय! मंदिर बाहेरून तर सुंदर वाटतंय. आतमध्ये जाऊन बघू म्हणून गेलो तर प्रचंड मोठी रांग! त्यामुळे जास्त न थांबता परत फिरलो. परत मुख्य रस्त्याकडे येताना ढकलणार्या वार्याचा आणि बाजूला पहुडलेल्या समुद्राचा रोमांच! आत्ताच इथे इतका वारा आहे तर पावसाळ्यात काय होत असेल! मी मूळ योजनेप्रमाणे पावसाळ्यात आलो असतो तर!!??
रामेश्वरममध्ये आर्ट ऑफ लिव्हिंगच्या आणि विवेकानंद केंद्राच्या एका जणाचा संपर्क मिळाला होता. पण त्यांची भेट होऊ शकली नाही. रामेश्वरमचं मंदिर बघायला गेलो. प्रचंड गर्दी! रोखलेली वाहनं आणि वन वे रस्ते! थोड्या अंतरावर सायकल लावली आणि चालत गेलो. थक्क करणारी वास्तु! अतिशय देखणं मंदिर. निर्माण करणारे लोक कोण असतील, कसे असतील! आत जायला खूप रांग आहे. त्यामुळे बाहेरच थोडा वेळ थांबलो. ते मंदिर काही क्षण अनुभवलं आणि डोळ्यांमध्ये साठवलं. आणि परत फिरलो!
रामेश्वरममधलं अजून एक आकर्षण म्हणजे डॉ. अब्दुल कलाम स्मारक! मुख्य रस्त्याला थोडं पंबनच्या बाजूला ते आहे. तिथेही भेट दिली. मोबाईल बाहेर लॉकरमध्ये ठेवावा लागतो. त्यामुळे फोटो नाही घेता आले. डॉ. अब्दुल कलामांचं लहानपण, वाटचाल, त्यांचं संशोधन, अग्नीबाण- रॉकेट- मिसाईल असं वेगवेगळं योगदान आणि काम ह्याची माहिती देणारे सुंदर फोटोज आहेत. शिवाय रॉकेटस- मिसाईलच्या छोट्या प्रतिकृतीसुद्धा आहेत. मोठा वैज्ञानिक आणि शिक्षक- पण त्याचं माणूसपण छान उलगडलं आहे. असंख्य लोकांसोबतचे त्यांचे छायाचित्र आहेत. आणि अगदी सामान्य व्यक्तीपासूनची त्यांची वाटचाल दाखवली आहे. आपणसुद्धा असे कोणी होऊ शकतो, हा विश्वास बघणार्याला मिळू शकतो. त्यामुळे मुलांनी आवर्जून भेट द्यावी असं हे स्मारक आहे.
मोबाईल लॉकरमधून घेतला. तिथेच चिक्की आणि ज्युस घेतला आणि निघालो! हळु हळु रामेश्वरम बेट पार होतंय! अर्थात् परिसर इतका मोठा आहे की, आपण बेटावर आहोत, ही जाणीव अशी होत नाही! ती जाणीव पंबनचा सेतू दिसायला लागल्यावर होते! स्थापत्यशास्त्राने निर्माण केलेलं आश्चर्य! रामेश्वरमकडून जाताना दुसर्या बाजूचा व्ह्यू बघता आला! अथांग- अफाट सागर आणि त्यातल्या असंख्य नौका! लाटाच लाटा! आणि आडवा- तिडवा वारा! त्यातच ट्रॅफिक जाम! थांबावं लागतंय. पण त्यामुळे फोटोही घेता आले. तो रोमांच अनुभवता आला. हळु हळु ब्रिज पार झाला! मंडपम गाव आलं.
१४ व्या दिवसाची राईड पूर्ण झाली. आजचे ८६ किमी झाले. निसर्गाने खूप साथ दिली. समुद्रालगतचा किंवा समुद्रावरचाच रस्ता असल्यामुळे आज चढ/ क्लाइंब अगदी कमी होतं. पण परतीच्या वाटेवर वारा मोठा होता. दुपारी थोडा आराम केला. छोट्या आरवसोबत खेळलो. सलग दुसरा मुक्काम एका ठिकाणी होईल असं वाटत असताना संध्याकाळी दुसरीकडे जावं लागलं. कथिरगमाजींकडे पाहुणे येणार असल्यामुळे त्यांनी त्यांच्या एका मित्राच्या घरी सोय केली. स्वत: सायकल चालवत सोबत आले. तिथे जाण्याच्या वेळी परत एकदा सगळं सामान पॅक करावं लागलं! निघण्याच्या आधी मी त्यांना निरामयने प्रकाशित केलेलं योगावरचं इंग्रजी पुस्तक दिलं. मंडपम स्टेशनच्या पलीकडे त्यांच्या मित्रांचं घर आहे. कथिरगमाजींनी मला हॉटेलमध्ये जेवायला नेलं. इथे काही ठिकाणी पोळी भाजी मिळते. त्याला कुर्मा म्हणतात. ते छान जेवलो. दुसर्या मुक्कामाची रूम गच्चीत आहे! जवळून जाणार्या ट्रेनचे आवाज आणि ढगांमधून दिसणारे तारे! काय दिवस गेला! नागराजजींसारखे काय लोक भेटत आहेत! वा!
