South India cycle expedition 11: Kanyakumari to Thiruchendur 91 kms

Hello. Dawn of 22nd January. I got up early as I was going to beach in Vivekananda Kendra. The road to that beach goes from the campus. This is very beautifully maintained. There are many persons come for the Sunrise! In Maharashtra, we are used to Sunset on the beach! But henceforth it will be Sunrise! The beach is really silent and awesome. Spent some moments there. There are clouds in the East. So the Sunrise will not be seen. I handed over the room key to the reception and left the campus. Today will start a new region of unknown villages! There are no major known people on this route and even known organizations, like the case was till now. I have just planned to take halts after every 90- 95 kms.

There is not much traffic so early in the morning. Soon I was out of Kanyakumari city. But whoa! The wind is damn strong! That also coming from East. Exactly opposite direction! If it remains the same, it would surely reduce my speed! And immediately I felt worried- if there is so much of wind even here, what will be the situation on Pumban bridge and on the road towards Dhanushkodi! Once I cycled a few kilometers, I got back the pleasant countryside. Clean nature. Since last some days, I was riding in urbanized Keralam. I missed the trees, the farms and open nature. Now again I am having that! The roads are internal, but they are excellent!

I had my breakfast in one square. I took tea biscuits in one hotel and Idli chutney in another hotel. Here everything is served on Banana leaf, like the traditional Indian way. Here, I saw that someone from Pune had donated to one temple nearby. Village temples are also remarkable. Churches are also there. When I joined the main highway, I saw many cyclists. Mostly they are doing a long endurance ride of 200 kms. For some distance, I continued on the highway. Then again I turned towards right, towards the coast for Tiruchendur. Here, it is written ECR! East Coast Road has started! Oh!

Tiruchendur seems to be a famous town. Its distance is written at many places. Also there are distances of Tirunelveli and Tuticorin (Thoothukudi). But the wind is damn strong! My speed is reduced already. It has reduced to 17- 18 kms per hour from 21- 22 km per hour in general conditions. Due to this much of wind, there are plenty of wind mills also! In fact, I crossed hundreds of them! This must be a high- wind region. But that means I will have this opposite direction wind further also! On everyday, I will need one hour more!

Roads are just clean. No lacunae. School- going children wave their hands at me! When a bus goes, children turn back to see me! Today it is 11th day, no issue whatsoever with the cycle! Maybe nothing will happen, even not a puncture also. I just need to look after the cycle, continue to talk and listen to my cycle! 

I had second breakfast at around 11:30 am. I talked informally with the people in the hotel. I can observe and read many people. On this entire route, “he” is just near, but he is not visible. Once in while only I see his blue strip in the distance. But mostly he is like “जो जलवा ओझल भी है सामने भी है!”

I was told that there is a farm house of one of Seva Bharati person near Tiruchendur. But it was some distance away and no one stays there. And Tiruchendur temple is worth visiting. So I decided to stay in Tiruchendur. Shri. Vijay Rajmohan ji made arrangements at one hotel. These days, here is a pilgrimage going on. People barefoot walk long distances. They also carry a sugarcane with them, just like I had seen near Ooty. I was told that even the town would be crowded. I did not find those many people initially. This looks like a famous but small town with narrow roads. 

Due to strong opposite winds, instead of 4.5 hours, it took me 5.5 hours. I reached Tiruchendur by 1.30 in the afternoon. I stayed at one hotel. Actually I would have stayed with some person of Seva Bharati or even home stay. But then I stayed in the hotel as told by Shri. Vijay Rajmohanji. Completed 91 kms for the day and overall 1017 kms in 11 days. 

In the evening, I went to see the temple and the beach. Here, one has to think about the dress code while visiting temples! South Indian Gods put so many conditions! Even in the temple, there are men without any clothes in the upper body. So I decided to just see the temple from outside, without going really inside. Oh! But how beautiful it is! So special! Such a massive and articulate temple in this small town! How can it be so beautiful! And not just one, there are many such monuments in this campus. Arulmigu Subraniya Swami is its name. Tiruchendur, Tirupati or Thiruvanantapuram- Tiru or Thiru is a beautiful word meaning constant, eternal. 

Oh, even in this crowd, people have brought one elephant! So much rush is there. I am slightly afraid, someone may stop me due to lack of the dress code. I just went further. I am seeing many barefoot people, but also a few people are having their sandals! I went further and reached one small wall. Oh! The colossal vastness! He is right there. The beach is also there. I observed the top of the temple for quite some time! Beautiful architecture! There is Moon right above the top. Many people are there on the beach. I just stood for some time. Thoroughly watched this surrounding. I also got tea here! South Indian temples! Unique cosmetics and styles! Women with white and other coloured saris! Various hairstyles too.

When it was dark, I also saw Jupiter risen above "him." I slowly returned back and found a way through the people. I took Uttapam where I had taken lunch. I had a brief conversation with the hotel persons. That was my supper. I returned back to the hotel. Here I did not meet any person or did not have any interaction with students. But I could read people and experience the town! The temple is amazing! I am really so fortunate! 11 days are completed, really! I feel that coming days would go very rapidly. And one very important thing- Awareness that I am mostly never visiting these places again! So every stage, every kilometer or every pedal gives so unique experience!

दक्षिण भारतातील सायकल प्रवासाचे अनुभव ११: कन्याकुमारी ते तिरूचेंदूर ९१ किमी

नमस्कार. २२ जानेवारीची पहाट. विवेकानंद केंद्रातल्या बीचवर जायचं असल्यामुळे थोडं लवकर आवरलं. केंद्राच्या कँपसच्या आतमध्ये बीचकडे जाणारा रस्ता आहे. परिसर खूप छान जपला आहे. सूर्योदयासाठी अनेक जण आलेले आहेत! महाराष्ट्रात बीचवर सूर्यास्ताची सवय असते! इथून पुढे बीचवर सूर्योदय असेल! खूप शांत आणि सुंदर बीच आहे. काही क्षण तिथे थांबलो. पूर्वेला ढग आहेत, त्यामुळे सूर्योदय तर दिसणार नाहीय. केंद्राच्या रिसेप्शनमधल्या व्यक्तींकडे रूमची किल्ली देऊन निघालो. आजपासून खूप वेगळ्या गावांचा टप्पा सुरू होईल! वाटेतमध्ये विशेष ओळखीसुद्धा नाही आहेत आणि संस्थापण माहिती नाही आहेत. बस ९०- ९५ किलोमीटर अंतरावर थांबायचं, इतकंच माहिती आहे.

सकाळी रहदारी अगदी कमी आहे. त्यामुळे कन्याकुमारीच्या बाहेर लगेचच आलो. पण हाsss वारा! तोही  पूर्वेकडून पश्चिमेकडे येणारा! म्हणजे माझ्या बरोबर विरुद्ध दिशेला. हा असाच राहिला तर नक्कीच माझा वेग कमी होईल! आणि मनात लगेचच शंका आली, इथेच किनार्‍यावर इतका वारा असेल तर पुढे पंबनचा पूल आणि धनुषकोडीला तर किती जास्त वारा असेल! थोडं पुढे आल्यावर मोकळा निसर्ग परत मिळाला! गेले अनेक दिवस दाट वस्तीच्या केरलममध्ये होतो. त्यामुळे झाडं, शेतं, मोकळा निसर्ग बघायला मिळाला नव्हता. इथून पुढे परत तसा परिसर मिळणार! रस्तेही तसे आतलेच. पण उत्तम दर्जाचे!

एका चौकात हॉटेलमध्ये थांबलो. चहा बिस्किट आणि बाजूला दुसर्‍या हॉटेलात इडली चटणी असा नाश्ता केला. केळीच्या पानावरच इथे पदार्थ वाढले जातात. इथल्या एका मंदिरात पुणे जिल्ह्यातल्या एका गावाने देणगी दिलेली दिसली! मध्ये मध्ये लागणारी मंदिरंही सुंदर आहेत. चर्चसुद्धा काही ठिकाणी आहेत. पुढे मुख्य मार्गाला आलो तेव्हा अनेक सायकलिस्टस दिसले. बहुतेक ते २०० किलोमीटरची राईड करत असावेत. काही अंतर महामार्ग लागला. नंतर तिरूचेंदूरसाठी रस्ता परत किनार्‍याच्या बाजूला वळला. इथे चक्क ECR लिहीलंय! म्हणजे ईस्ट कोस्ट रोड सुरू झाला! व्वा!

तिरूचेंदूर बहुतेक प्रसिद्ध गाव आहे. त्यामुळे खूप ठिकाणी त्याचं अंतर लिहीलेलं दिसतं आहे. त्याबरोबर तिरूनेलवेली, टुटीकोरीन (तूतुकडी) अशा गावांचे अंतरही दिसत आहेत. पण वारा फार जास्त आहे! वेग लक्षणीय प्रकारे कमी होतोय. साधारण २१- २२ प्रति तास मिळणारा वेग अगदी १७- १८ किमी तास इतका कमी होतोय. इतक्या वार्‍यामुळेच पवनचक्क्याही आहेत इथे. आणि पुढे गेल्यावर तर अक्षरश: शेकडो पवनचक्क्या लागल्या! नक्कीच इथे मोठा वारा नेहमी वाहत असला पाहिजे. पण ह्याचाच अर्थ मला पुढेही हा उलटा वारा लागणार! रोज पोहचायला एक तास उशीर होणार! असो. 

रस्ते अतिशय सुंदर. कुठेच काही कमतरता नाही. शाळांमध्ये जाणारी मुलं हात करतात! एखादी बस जाते तेव्हा बसमधून मुलं वळून बघतात! आज अकरावा दिवस आहे. सायकलीला काहीही झालं नाहीय. कदाचित पुढेही साधं पंक्चरही होणार नाही असं वाटतंय. तिच्याकडे लक्ष मात्र द्यावं लागेल. तिच्याशी बोलत राहावं लागेल, तिचं ऐकत राहावं लागेल! 

११.३० च्या सुमारास अजून एकदा ब्रेकफास्ट केला. हॉटेलमधल्या लोकांसोबत अनौपचारिक बोलणं छान होतं. लोक बघता येतात, वाचता येतात! ह्या सगळ्या रस्त्यावर "तो" अगदी जवळ आहे. पण जवळ असूनही दिसत नाही! अगदी कुठे कुठे दूरवर त्याची निळी पट्टी दिसतेय. पण जास्त करून तो "जो जलवा ओझल भी है सामने भी है" आहे!
  
तिरूचेंदूरजवळ सेवा भारतीच्या एका कार्यकर्त्यांचं फार्म हाऊस आहे असं कळालं. पण ते थोडं लांब आणि तिथे कोणीच राहात नाहीत. आणि तिरूचेंदूरचं मंदिर बघण्यासारखं आहे. त्यामुळे तिरूचेंदूरमध्येच थांबायचं ठरवलं. श्री. विजय राजमोहनजींनी तिथली व्यवस्था केली. इथे सध्या यात्रा सुरू असलेली दिसते आहे. लोक अनवाणी पायी जाताना दिसतात. सोबत ऊस घेतलेला दिसतो. जसं उटीच्या बाजूला दिसत होतं तसंच दृश्य. गावातही खूप गर्दी असेल, असं सांगितलं होतं. प्रत्यक्षात गावात सुरूवातीला तेवढी गर्दी वाटली नाही. प्रसिद्ध असलं तरी लहान रस्त्यांचं छोटं गावच वाटतंय. 

उलट्या वार्‍यामुळे साडेचार तासांच्या ऐवजी साडेपाच तास लागले. दुपारी १.३० ला तिरूचेंदुरला पोहचलो. मंदिराजवळच्या एका हॉटेलमध्ये आज थांबेन. हॉटेलात थांबण्यापेक्षा होम स्टे आवडला असता. किंवा कार्यकर्त्यांच्या घरीसुद्धा. पण शेवटी श्री. विजय राजमोहनजींनी सांगितल्याप्रमाणे हॉटेलात थांबलो. आजचे ९१ किलोमीटर आणि ११ दिवसांचे १०१७ किलोमीटर पूर्ण झाले! 

संध्याकाळी मंदिर आणि बीच बघायला बाहेर पडलो. इथे मंदिरात जाताना ड्रेस कोडचा फार विचार करावा लागतो! इथल्या देवाच्या अटी फार असतात! मंदिर परिसरातही उघडेबंब फिरणारे लोक दिसत आहेत. त्यामुळे मी अगदी आत न जाता बाहेरून परिसर बघेन. अहा हा! काय सुंदर उंच मंदिर आहे! विलक्षण! इतक्या लहान गावात इतकं भव्य आणि सुंदर मंदिर कसं काय असू शकतं! आणि एकच नाही, तर परिसरात बरीच छोटी मंदिरं आहेत. अरूलमिगु सुब्रमनिया स्वामी हे मुख्य मंदिराचं नाव. तिरूचेंदूर, तिरूपती किंवा तिरूअनंतपूरममधला थिर शब्द सुंदर आहे. स्थिर, शाश्वत असा त्याचा अर्थ! 

अरे! इतक्या गर्दीत चक्क एक हत्तीसुद्धा जाताना दिसतोय. लोक तर प्रचंड आहेतच! कोणी मला ड्रेस कोड न पाळल्यामुळे अडवेल का, अशी भिती बाळगत बाळगत पुढे गेलो. बरेचसे लोक चपला न घातलेलेही आहेत. पण काही जण चपलावालेही आहेत! पुढे तसंच जाऊन कठड्याकडे आलो! आणि समोर तो! अहा हा! समोरच बीच आहे! मंदिराचं शिखर खूप वेळ बघितलं. इतरही वास्तु सुंदर आहेत! कळसाच्या बरोबर वर चंद्र दिसतोय! वा! बीचवरही अनेक जण आहेत. थोडा वेळ नुसता उभा राहिलो. मनसोक्त परिसर बघितला. बीचवर चहासुद्धा मिळाला! दक्षिण भारतीय मंदिरं! वेगळी वेशभुषा- केशभुषा! पांढर्‍या आणि इतर रंगाच्या दक्षिण भारतीय साड्या नेसलेल्या महिला! गजरेही वेगवेगळ्या रंगांचे!

अंधार पडल्यावर "त्याच्या" वर उगवलेला गुरूसुद्धा दिसला. गर्दीमधून हळु हळु परत फिरलो. दुपारी जेवलो होतो तिथे उत्तप्पा घेतला. हॉटेलमधल्या लोकांशी थोडं बोलणं झालं. संध्याकाळचं जेवण घेऊन हॉटेलवर परत आलो. इथे कोणी भेटले नाहीत. किंवा शाळा- महाविद्यालयामध्येही भेटणं नाही झालं. पण लोक वाचता आले, गाव अनुभवता आलं! आणि मंदिर! खरंच माझा योग खूप चांगला आहे! चक्क ११ दिवस पूर्ण झालेसुद्धा! पुढचे दिवस खूप लवकर संपणार असं वाटतंय! शिवाय एक महत्त्वाची गोष्ट म्हणजे जवळ जवळ परत मी कधीही इकडे येणार नाहीय ही जाणीव! त्यामुळे एक एक टप्पा, एक एक किलोमीटर किंवा एक एक पेडलही खूप युनिक अनुभव देतंय!
