Experiment 40. Make your own compass!

You know what compass is? Not the one which you take to your school. Compass is a device which points North and South directions. It is vital for navigation, especially you are traveling at remote places such as mountains or sailing in a sea! Let’s make our own compass. For this, you will need a powerful magnet, a small needle and a piece of rubber or thermocol (any light material which will easily float on water). Take a plate. Add some water into it. Put the rubber or thermocol in the water. It will float. By taking help from someone, mark the directions near the plate- N for North and S for South. Now rub the needle or pin on the magnet. Do this in the same direction for 50 to 60 times. You will need 2 minutes to do it. Rub entire the needle in the same direction. This will give it temporary magnetism. Now put the needle on the floating rubber or thermocol. It will move for some time and then will settle in a specific direction! It will be in North- South position! South pole of the needle is attracted by the North pole of the giant magnet called Earth! Even if you move it, it will again go back to North- South position! This will last as long as its magnetism is there. Also observe, how you have used water as a platform and the rubber as base for pointer!

Activity 40. Effect of a good company!

In above experiment, the needle got magnetism from the magnet as it remained in its company for some time! Therefore company matters and a good company is always helpful! You know that some diseases are contagious! But health and qualities are also infectious! Remember this. We will now relate this with stars in the sky! We can identify stars from their company i.e. adjacent star. We can also make patterns and groups of stars and remember this. Now this is a small question. When you are outside in the night- say in a forest or on a mountain, then how you can determine North direction? Which stars are going to help you? Answer this. You can get help from your friends or elders. No harm in getting help from such a good company!


प्रयोग 40. तुमचे होकायंत्र (कंपास) बनवा!
 
तुम्हांला होकायंत्र माहिती आहे का? होकायंत्र म्हणजे कंपास. तो नाही जो तुम्ही शाळेत नेता. कंपास किंवा होकायंत्र म्हणजे असं यंत्र जे उत्तर व दक्षिण दिशा दाखवतं. तुम्ही दूर कुठे असताना म्हणजे डोंगरात फिरत असाल किंवा समुद्रात जहाजामधून जात असाल तेव्हा दिशा निश्चित करण्यासाठी व रस्ता शोधण्यासाठी ते उपयोगी असतं. आपण एक होकायंत्र बनवूया! त्यासाठी तुम्हांला एक मोठं चुंबक, एक छोटी सुई व रबराचा किंवा थर्मोकॉलचा तुकडा लागेल (अशी हलकी वस्तु जी सहजपणे पाण्यावर तरंगते). एक ताटली घ्या. तिच्यात पाणी ओता. पाण्यात रबर किंवा थर्मोकॉल टाका. ते तरंगेल.  गरज असेल तर कोणाची मदत घेऊन ताटलीच्या बाजूला उत्तर व दक्षिण दिशांची खूण करा. उत्तरेला उ किंवा N आणि दक्षिणेला द किंवा S लिहा. आता सुईला चुंबकावर एकाच दिशेमध्ये 50 ते 60 वेळेस घासा. त्यासाठी 2 मिनिटे लागतील. पूर्ण सुई एकाच दिशेने घासा. त्यामुळे सुईमध्ये तात्पुरते चुंबकत्व तयार होईल. आता चुंबक झालेली सुई रबरावर किंवा थर्मोकॉलवर ठेवा. ती‌ थोडा वेळ हलेक आणि मग एकाच स्थितीमध्ये स्थिर होईल. सुईचा दक्षिण ध्रुव पृथ्वी नावाच्या विशाल चुंबकाच्या उत्तर ध्रुवाकडे आकर्षित होईल! तुम्ही तिला हलवलं तरी ती परत उत्तर- दक्षिण अशीच स्थिर होईल. सुईचं चुंबकत्व टिकेपर्यंत हे राहील. इथे तुम्ही पाण्याचा एक माध्यम म्हणून व रबराचा एक पाया म्हणून कसा वापर केला, ह्याचंही निरीक्षण करा!

गंमत 40. संगत का असर!

वरच्या प्रयोगामध्ये सुईला चुंबकत्व मिळालं, कारण ती काही वेळ चुंबकाच्या सोबत राहिली. त्यामुळे सोबत म्हणजे कंपनी महत्त्वाची असते. चांगली सोबत- अच्छी संगत नेहमी उपयोगी असते! काही रोग हे संसर्गजन्य (contagious) असतात, हे तुम्हांला माहिती आहे. पण आरोग्य किंवा गुणसुद्धा तसेच असतात व ते संगतीने वाढतात. हे लक्षात ठेवा. आता आपण ह्याचा संबंध आकाशातल्या ता-यांशी जोडू. आपण ता-यांना एकमेकांच्या सोबतीने ओळखू शकतो. म्हणजे सोबत असलेले तारे व ता-यांच्या ग्रूपनुसार त्यांना ओळखू शकतो. आपण त्यांचे पॅटर्न्स किंवा आकारही लक्षात ठेवू शकतो. आता एक प्रश्न पाहा. तुम्ही रात्री जेव्हा बाहेर असाल- जंगलात किंवा डोंगरात तेव्हा तुम्ही उत्तर दिशा कशी शोधाल? कोणते तारे तुम्हांला त्यासाठी मदत करतील? ह्याचं उत्तर द्या. तुमचे मित्र किंवा मोठ्यांची मदत तुम्ही घेऊ शकता. चांगल्या व्यक्तींच्या संगतीमध्ये असणं उपयोगीच पडतं!
