Experiment 29. Make Moon phases

Take a ball. Tie it to a string in such a way that you can easily lift it and hang it. In the night, make complete darkness in one room. By using a small torch of mobile flash light, observe the ball from various angles. When there is a ninety degree angle between the ball, you and the light, then the ball will show half illuminated moon- the first quarter moon. When you will be very close to the light source and when the ball is facing straight you, then it will be the full moon phase of the ball. In this way, you can do all phases including even new moon phase (Amawas). If you wish, you can also place the ball in one carton box and observe light falling on it through holes. Or you can use a gourd (pumpkin) or a large pot in your backyard and observe light falling on it. It will also show the same phases.

Activity 29. Phases of planes

In the same manner, you can understand phases of Venus and Mercury. Remember sequence of planets in the solar system and visualize positions of Sun, Mercury, Venus and Earth. Send light on the ball by visualizing positions of these inner planets. Suppose you are looking at me from front and if there is a light behind me, then my face will only be partially illuminated. It cannot be fully illuminated as the light is from behind. Therefore Mercury and Venus also show phases like Moon and they are never 100% illuminated as we see.

प्रयोग 29. चंद्राच्या कला तयार करा

एक चेंडू घ्या. त्याला एका दोरीने असं घट्ट बांधा की तो तुम्हांला सहजपणे उचलता येईल व टांगता येईल. रात्री एका खोलीमध्ये पूर्ण अंधार करा. छोटा टॉर्च किंवा मोबाईलचा फ्लॅश वापरून वेगवेगळ्या कोनातून त्या चेंडूचं निरीक्षण करा. चेंडू, प्रकाश व तुम्ही ह्यामध्ये जेव्हा काटकोन असेल तेव्हा चेंडूची अष्टमी असेल. जेव्हा तुमच्या अगदी जवळून प्रकाश समोरच्या चेंडूवर पडत असेल तेव्हा चेंडूची पोर्णिमा असेल. अशाच प्रकारे अमावस्या व सगळ्या कला करून पाहा. तुम्ही वाटल्यास एका खोक्यामध्येही चेंडू ठेवून वेगवेगळ्या कोनातून त्याच्यावर प्रकाश पाडून कला बघू शकता. किंवा अंगणामध्ये एखादा भोपळा व माठ लांब ठेवला असेल तर तोही अशी कला दाखवेल.

गंमत 29. ग्रहांच्या कला

ह्याच पद्धतीने तुम्ही शुक्र व बुधाच्या कलाही समजून घेऊ शकता. सूर्यमालेतील ग्रहांच्या क्रमानुसार सूर्य, एक एक ग्रह व पृथ्वीची स्थिती कशी असेल, ह्याची कल्पना करा व चेंडूच्या स्थितीनुसार प्रकाश सोडून पाहा. समजा तुम्ही मला समोरून बघत आहात व माझ्या मागच्या बाजूला जर दिवा असेल तर माझ्या पूर्ण चेह-यावर कधीच प्रकाश येऊ शकत नाही. चेह-याच्या मर्यादित भागावरच तिरपा प्रकाश पडतो. त्यामुळे बूध व शुक्र हेसुद्धा चंद्रासारख्या कला दाखवतात व आपल्याला कधीच ते शंभर टक्के प्रकाशित दिसत नाहीत.
