Experiment 3. Function of an earthen pot

This is very simple experiment! These days in the summer, many of us have earthen pot in our houses. What you need to do is take a glass of water from such a pot and also take a glass of water which is not yet kept in the pot. Drink both types of waters. Experience the difference. Now think why the water in the earthen pot is cold as compared to the outside water. What does really happen inside the pot? Its reason that the pot is porous, it has very small holes. When we keep the normal water inside the pot, due to its temperature, the air inside the pot rises and leaves through the holes and as hot air leaves, its temperature drops. And by observation, you can also see that the more hot it is outside, the more cool the water in the pot gets! And now think, in winters if we keep water in the pot, would it become hot or cold? Think!

Activity 3. How to keep your water bottle cool in the playground?

Based on above observation, can you think of ways to keep the water cool even when you are outside? For this, basically you need to reduce transfer of heat. So you can use any barriers such as steel or even clothing insulation or papers. When a bottle is kept inside clothes, it remains cool for long time. Thermos works on the same principle. Hot tea or cold water- it remains the same for long in a thermos. And do you know that hot and cold are adjectives of the same energy? It is the same entity, only its degree is different for us. Now, think that you do not have a cooler, AC or a fan in your room. How can you make your room cool? How can you create barrier to the hot air coming from outside? Think. Try. Enjoy. प्रयोग 3. माठ कशामुळे गार होतो?

हा प्रयोग खूप सोपा आहे! उन्हाळ्यामध्ये आपल्यापैकी अनेकांकडे माठ असेल. तुम्हांला एक सोपी गोष्ट करायची आहे. एक ग्लास माठातलं पाणी घ्या आणि एक ग्लास माठात न ठेवलेलं पाणी घ्या. दोन्ही ग्लासमधलं पाणी पिऊन पाहा. त्यातला फरक अनुभवा. माठात न ठेवलेल्या पाण्याच्या तुलनेत माठात ठेवलेलं पाणी का गार होतं, ह्यावर विचार करा. माठामध्ये काय होतं? पाणी थंड होण्याचं कारण हे आहे की, माठ सच्छिद्र असतो. त्यामध्ये खूप बारीक छिद्र असतात. जेव्हा आपण बाहेरचं गरम पाणी त्यात ठेवतो, माठातली गरम हवा वरच्या बाजूला येते व त्या छिद्रांमधून बाहेर जाते. गरम हवा बाहेर पडल्यामुळे आतलं‌ तपमान कमी होतं. आणि तुम्ही निरीक्षण करू शकता की, जेव्हा बाहेर जास्त गरम होतं, तेव्हा माठातलं पाणी जास्त गार होतं! आता विचार करा, जर हिवाळ्यात आपण माठात पाणी ठेवलं, तर ते गार होईल का गरम? विचार करा!

गंमत कृती 3. खेळाच्या मैदानात तुमची पाण्याची बाटली गार कशी ठेवणार?

माठाच्या निरीक्षणानुसार तुम्ही मैदानातसुद्धा तुमची पाण्याची बाटली गार राहावी म्हणून काही करू शकता का? त्यासाठी तुम्हांला उष्णता इकडून तिकडे जाणं कमी करावं लागेल. त्यासाठी तुम्ही स्टीलसारखा अडथळा वापरू शकता. किंवा बाहेरून कापड किंवा कागदाचं आवरण लावू शकता. जेव्हा तुम्ही बाटली कापडात ठेवता, तेव्हा ती जास्त वेळ थंड राहते. थर्मास ह्याच तत्त्वावर काम करतो- गरम चहा किंवा थंड पाणी- ते त्यात खूप वेळ तसंच राहतं. आणि तुम्हांला माहिती आहे ना की, उष्णता व थंडपणा ही एकाच ऊर्जेची दोन रूपं आहेत! ऊर्जा तीच असते, फक्त आपल्यासाठी तिची तीव्रता वेगळी असते. आता असं समजा की, तुमच्या घरात कूलर, एसी किंवा पंखाही नाहीय. तुमची खोली गार राहावी म्हणून तुम्ही काय कराल? बाहेरची‌ गरम हवा येऊ नये म्हणून तुम्ही कसा अडथळा तयार कराल? विचार करा. प्रयत्न करा. तुमचा अनुभव नक्की सांगा.
