Experiment 9. Why things float on water?

Have you ever thought why some things float on water? Do this simple thing. Make a small boat of paper and float it in a bucketful water. Things float on water due to the property of buoyancy. Buoyancy or upthrust, is the force exerted by the fluid opposing the weight of a partially or fully immersed object. It indicates capacity of things to float. When a particular thing like wood floats on water, it displaces less amount of water of equal weight (i.e. it is less dense than water). If a particular thing displaces less water than its weight, then it floats. Compare with this- We can stand on soil as we displace very less amount of soil of our weight. But imagine if a huge building suddenly stands on soil, then it would displace high amount of soil of equal weight and therefore the building cannot stand on the soil, it would displace the soil and go inside.

Activity 9. Passengers for your boat!

Now you have your small boat floating on water. What can you put in the boat while it floats? Can you place a small rubber band? Can it carry a small eraser? What about a small chocolate? And if a soft toy is to be carried, how much should be the size of your boat? Think and try! And, think about three steel articles which float on water. Yes!

प्रयोग 9. पाण्यावर वस्तु का तरंगतात?

पाण्यावर वस्तु का तरंगतात ह्यावर तुम्ही कधी विचार केला आहे का? एक सोपी गोष्ट करू. कागदाची एक छोटी नाव बनवू व ती बादलीभर पाण्यात सोडू. तरणशक्ती किंवा प्लावकता (buoyancy/ upthrust) ह्या गुणधर्मामुळे वस्तु तरंगतात. तरणशक्ती हे त्या द्रवाचं बल असतं जे त्यावर पूर्णत: किंवा अंशत: बुडालेल्या वस्तुच्या वजनाला विरोध करतं. वस्तुचा तरंगण्याचा गुणधर्म ते दर्शवतं. जेव्हा लाकडासारखी एखादी गोष्ट पाण्यावर तरंगते, तेव्हा लाकूड हे समान वजनाच्या पाण्याच्या तुलनेत कमी पाण्याचे विस्थापन करत असते (कारण त्याची घनता पाण्याहून कमी असते). जी वस्तु पाण्याच्या वजनापेक्षा कमी वजनाला विस्थापित करते, ती तरंगते. विचार करा- आपण जमिनीवर उभे राहू शकतो, कारण आपण आपल्या वजनाच्या जमिनीला फार कमी प्रमाणात विस्थापित करतो. परंतु कल्पना करा की, एकदम एखादी मोठी इमारत जमिनीवर उभी राहिली, तर तिच्यामुळे समान वजनाच्या जमिनीचे मोठ्या प्रमाणात विस्थापन होईल व त्यामुळे इमारत जमिनीवर उभी राहू शकणार नाही तर आत जाईल.

गंमत 9. तुमच्या होडीचे प्रवासी!

आता तुमच्याकडे पाण्यावर तरंगणारी छोटी नाव आहे. ती तरंगू शकेल अशा प्रकारे तुम्ही त्यात काय काय ठेवू शकता? एखादं छोटं रबरबँड? एखादं छोटं इरेझर ती नेऊ शकेल?  किंवा छोटं चॉकलेट? आणि समजा एखादं सॉफ्ट टॉय पाण्यावर तरंगत ठेवायचं असेल तर किती मोठी नाव लागेल? विचार करा! प्रयत्न करा! आणि अशा स्टीलच्या तीन वस्तु सांगा ज्या पाण्यावर तरंगतात! होय!
